Five Players reached double figures as the Chestnut Hill men's basketball team rallied from a first half deficit to convincingly defeat the University of the District of Columbia 78-66 Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia.
The win was the Griffins' third straight and evens their record at 4-4. UDC falls to 1-8 on the season.
Conor Regan made six of eight shots from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range to lead Chestnut Hill with 17 points.Â
Amir Warrick scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and finished the game shooting 7-for-11 from the field. Â
David Erebor added 11 points and a game high ten rebounds to record his second double-double of the season. Erebor also had a team-high three assists.
Rounding out the Griffins' double figure scorers were
Trevonn Pitts and
James Rider IV who scored 11 points apiece.Â
Noah Charles and
MJ Iraldi also had three assists apiece to tie for the team lead.
Chestnut Hill used a 10-6 run in the first four minutes of the second half to tie the game at 46-46, then exploded with a 21-2 uprising over the next seven minutes to take a 19-point lead 67-48. The Griffins connected on eight of ten shots during the run which was highlighted by eight points from Rider and five from Pitts. UDC's Tevin Curtis broke the spurt with a three-pointer at the 7:47 mark but Rider countered with his third trey of the game and Pitts followed with a dunk off a steal to boost the lead to 72-51 their largest of the game.   The CHC lead oscillated between 17 and 21 points until the final three minutes as the Firebirds scored the final seven points of the game to make the final margin a 12-point win for the Griffins.
Kenyon Stone led the Firebirds with 25 points while Phillip Brown Jr. came off the bench to score 15.
Both teams shot exceptionally well with the Firebirds producing a 63.6% effort from the field in the first half and finishing the gamer making 24-48 for 50%. The Griffins shot 51.7% in the first half and 56.7% in the second to finish the game shooting 54.2% (32-59). The griffins also made nine of 19 three point shots while UDC made six of 16. UDC held a slight advantage on the free throw line making 123 of 14 while the Griffins struggled making just five of 11. The Firebirds also had a 29-24 rebounding advantage while the Griffins committed seven fewer turnovers (14-21).
The Griffins are back in action on Saturday, December 11, 2021 when they host Mercy College in a non-conference clash at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
