East Stroudsburg, Pa. - (3/10/2021) – Senior left fielder Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) broke the silence in the fifth inning of today's series finale at #18 East Stroudsburg University (ESU), connecting on a three-run home run that gave Chestnut Hill College their initial lead of the contest, 3-0. ESU answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, 4-3, only for the Griffins to score three runs with two out in the seventh inning, 6-4, and lean on the relief work of junior Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) to endure the Spartans to a 7-6 victory.
Junior Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) cruised through the first three innings, keeping ESU (1-2) off the scoreboard before handing the mound off to his classmate, Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.). Chestnut Hill College (2-1) got things going in the top of the fifth inning, using a one-out throwing error, a stolen base from junior Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.), a walk to junior centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), a double steal, and Uzzell's three-run home run to plate the first tallies of the affair. Unfortunately, the Spartans surpassed the Griffins production in the bottom of the frame, netting four runs on four hits and a pair of errors.
The second Scarlet and Gold push came in the top of the seventh inning, when a leadoff walk to senior Patrick Meenan (Oreland, Pa.), a Barletta double, and a pair of ground outs tied the contest at 4-4. The Griffins would score twice more in the frame thanks to a Spartan error and a two-out single from freshman right fielder Anthony Coombs (Bridgeton, N.J.), 6-4. ESU was able to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh, 6-5, and traded runs with Chestnut Hill College in the eighth inning, 7-6, but they were never able to complete their rally as Hughes struck out the side in the ninth.
Barletta (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases) and Dietz (2-for-5, 1 run) recorded two hits apiece for the Scarlet and Gold. Uzzell was 1-for-4 with a run and four runs-batted-in (RBI).
Chestnut Hill College continues their early-season road schedule on Friday, March 12, with a 2:00 p.m. contest at Millersville University.
