Scarlet and Gold Setback by Clippers in CACC Affair

Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/10/2021) – Chestnut Hill College returned to action after more than a two-week layoff as they hosted Concordia College in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match. The Clippers won the team flights in order, 1-0, before scoring match-winning individual victories in the fifth (6-4, 6-0), fourth (6-4, 6-2), and first (6-1, 7-5) singles flights. Junior Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.) was the last Griffin to fall in singles play, drawing out the sixth individual match to a 6-3, 6-3, conclusion.

Concordia College (4-0, 4-0) was quick to the doubles point, defeating Chestnut Hill College (1-5, 1-3) in the first (6-0) and second (6-2) flights. The Clippers also won the third doubles flight, but by a much slimmer margin as Vassalluzzo and sophomore Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) battled to a 7-6 defeat.

In singles, the necessary individual wins came in the fifth (6-4, 6-0), fourth (6-4, 6-2), and first (6-1, 7-5) individual flights. Freshman Nele Haag (Tauberbischofsheim, Germany) lasted just a shade longer in a 6-3, 7-5, loss at number two singles and freshman Annika Wise pushed number three singles to a third set, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, before Vassalluzzo finally fell at six singles.

Chestnut Hill College continues their CACC schedule on Monday, April 12, when they host the University of the Sciences in a 2:30 p.m. match.
