North Wales, Pa. - (4/12/2021) – Senior designated hitter Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) and sophomore right fielder Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) powered Chestnut Hill College to a 10-5 victory in the first game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Thomas Jefferson University. The second game was tighter, knotting at 2-2 in the first inning and 3-3 in the fourth inning, before the Rams outscored the Griffins in the sixth, 5-4, and seventh, 6-4.
Uzzell was 5-for-9 with four doubles, two runs, a run-batted-in (RBI), and a stolen base, while Dunnuck finished the day 3-for-9 with a home run, two runs, and five RBI. Junior Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) earned the win (2-1) in the opener, allowing one earned run on four hits and five walks. He struck out seven in six innings of work.
Uzzell got Chestnut Hill College (4-11, 1-7) going in the opener with his lead off double to deep right center. He quickly advanced to third base on as passed ball and was joined on base by junior catcher Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and junior first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) before scoring on a wild pitch, 2-1. Barletta followed on a sacrifice fly from freshman centerfielder R.J. Huth (Fairless Hills, Pa.), 2-2. The two runs made up for the pair that Thomas Jefferson University (10-6, 7-3) scored in the top of the first inning, 2-2.
Afterwards, Bethel settled in, allowing a single Ram hit over the next five frames. Meanwhile, the Scarlet and Gold bats kept connecting as a Dunnuck moon-shot brought three runs home in the second inning, 5-2, a wild pitch delivered freshman second baseman Greg Sylvester (Trevose, Pa.) in the third inning, 6-2, an RBI bunt-single from Huth and a Ram error in the fourth inning, 8-2, and a Huth sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, 9-2. Jefferson narrowed the gap with a pair of seventh-inning runs, 9-4, but that is as close as they would get with each side scoring a run late, 10-5.
The action continued early in game two with each side scored a pair of first-inning runs, 2-2. Chestnut Hill College grabbed a 3-2 edge in the third inning thanks to sacrifice fly from freshman right fielder Anthony Coombs (Bridgeton, N.J.), but the Rams got it back in the fourth inning, 3-3 and took a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning with a leadoff walk and a pair of one-out base hits.
Uzzell added to the late-inning drama with an RBI-double in the bottom of the frame, 5-4. Unfortunately, the tension was eased with Jefferson adding an insurance tally in the top of the seventh, 6-4.
Chestnut Hill College hosts the University of the Sciences next as they welcome the Devils to Hostelley Field on Wednesday, April 14, for a 3:00 p.m. CACC contest.
