Griffins and Devils Split CACC Doubleheader, Ahmed Scores Game-Two Win with Seventh-Inning Single

Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/18/2021) – The end came to busy week of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play today as Chestnut Hill College visited South Division rival University of the Sciences (USciences) for a pair of contests at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's Franklin D. Roosevelt Park. The Griffins got revenge on the Devils' 13-6 game-one win with another dramatic victory in game two. Down 5-3 in the seventh inning, the Scarlet and Gold used a lead off home run from sophomore right fielder Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.), 5-4, and a two-out, two-run single from freshman left fielder Zach Ahmed (Las Vegas, Nev.) to come out ahead, 6-5.

Chestnut Hill College (8-12, 5-8) fell behind USciences (3-7, 3-7) early in game one, trailing the home team 4-1 after the first inning, 6-2 after the fourth inning, and 13-5 after the seventh inning. Junior first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.)  would single home junior catcher Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) home in the seventh inning, but the only additional tally the Griffins would put on the scoreboard in a 13-6 final. Senior designated hitter Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI, SB), Dietz (2-for-4, 2 RBI, SB), and freshman shortstop Nick Delacruz (South Brunswick, N.J.) (2-for-4, 2B, R) each record two hits in the loss.

The second game was scoreless through two innings. The Griffins plated two runs in the top of the third, 2-0, but fell behind soon after with four Devils coming home in the bottom of the frame, 4-2. Freshman second baseman Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning, drawing a leadoff walk, moving to second on an Ahmed sacrifice, and then to third base on a passed ball, before hustling home on a wild pitch, 4-3. USciences reestablished the two-run margin with a run in their half of the frame, 5-3, but fortunes flipped in the seventh frame as Dunnuck and Ahmed's bats cleared the way for the first career save of sophomore Dan Rockenbach (Holland, Pa.) (1.0 IP, SV 1 K).

Chestnut Hill College return to Hostelley Field on Tuesday, April 20, to host Wilmington University in a 6:00 p.m. CACC contest.
