North Wales, Pa. - (4/22/2021) – Chestnut Hill College gave Bloomfield College little chance in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) proceedings. The Griffins welcomed the Bears with 17 runs in their first two at-bats and eventually won the first game of the doubleheader by a 19-0 margin. Game two was slightly more competitive as the Scarlet and Gold posted a 10-2 advantage after three innings and owned a 15-3 lead when the contest came to a close.
Junior Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) helped himself to his first win (1-2, 5.0 IP, 2 H, BB, 6 K) of the season in the opener with a 3-for-6 effort that included a double, a home run, two runs, and six runs-batted-in (RBI). In game two, junior catcher/right fielder Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and senior second baseman Patrick Meenan (Oreland, Pa.) each knocked in four runs; the former was 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and a stolen base, while the latter (3-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 runs) connected for a grand slam during the Griffins' five-run first inning.
Chestnut Hill College (11-12, 8-8) wasted no time putting Bloomfield College (7-9, 7-8) under as back-to-back singles from senior left fielder Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) and Barletta, and a walk to junior centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) set the table for a three-run Dietz double to right center, 3-0. The Griffins would go on to score five more times in the inning, 8-0. Nine second-inning runs, pushed the Scarlet and Gold out to a cumbersome 17-0 advantage that haunted the Bears all the way to the 19-0 final. Dietz allowed two hits and a walk over five innings of work; he struck out six in the victory.
The second game featured just as many fireworks as Chestnut Hill College plated five in the first inning, 5-0, outscored the Bears 3-1 in the second inning (8-1) and 2-1 in the third inning (10-2), before a five-run fifth inning overshadowed a third Bloomfield College run and extended the Griffin advantage to the eventual final score, 15-3. Junior Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) was the benefactor of all the Griffin runs, collecting his second win (2-2) of the season while allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out eight over six innings (6.0).
Chestnut Hill College looks to remain hot as they take to the road on Sunday, April 25, for a noon (12:00 p.m.) CACC doubleheader at Wilmington University.
