Red Hot Griffins Grab Two CACC Games from Dominican College

Orangeburg, N.J. - (4/26/2021) – A winner in 10 of their last 12 games, Chestnut Hill College remained red hot with today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep at Dominican College. The Griffins used a four-run sixth inning to earn junior Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) his third win (3-2; 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) of the season, before punishing the Chargers in a 19-7, game-two final. Senior designated hitter Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) (2-for-4, 1 R, 3 RBI) and freshman outfielder R.J. Huth (Fairless Hills, Pa.) (2-for-3, 3 R, 4 RBI) combined for seven runs-batted-in (RBI) in the second game and were two of four Griffins to record multiple hits.

High off the game-one win, Chestnut Hill College (13-12, 10-8) came out swinging in game two. The Scarlet and Gold scored four runs in the top of the first inning as junior catcher Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) scored on a double down the right field line from junior centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), 1-0, junior first baseman Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) singled in Contoudis, 2-0, and Huth brought home two more Griffins with a two-out double to left center, 4-0. Dominican College (13-8, 6-6) got one run back in the bottom of the first inning, 4-1, but had little answer for the Scarlet and Gold the rest of the way in a 19-7 final.

In the opener, Chestnut Hill College pulled even with the Chargers in the third inning as Barletta's two-out double down the right field line made use of a one-out walk from freshman shortstop Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.); 1-1. Dominican College reclaimed the lead with a run in the fourth frame, 2-1, but a four-run Griffin sixth inning provided enough coverage for the Scarlet and Gold in a 5-4 final.

In the sixth, Chestnut Hill College finally gave Bethel the run support he needed as a leadoff walk to Dietz, a one-out steal, a single down the left field line from senior second baseman Patrick Meenan (Oreland, Pa.) was just the start, 2-2. After, a wild pitch, a walk and a stolen base from Huth, freshman pinch hitter Anthony Coombs (Bridgeton, N.J.) sacrificed home the go-ahead run, 3-2. Uzzell's two-out double to right center brought home the other two Scarlet and Gold runs in the frame, 5-2. Dominican College looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, but junior Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) relieved Bethel for his first save of his collegiate career. He allowed one hit and struck out three over while recording the final four outs of the affair.

Chestnut Hill College returns to Hostelley Field on Friday, April 30, to host Post University in a pair of seven-inning CACC games.
