Hockessin, Del. - (5/10/2021) – Junior first baseman
Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) singled in Scarlet and Gold runs in the first and seventh innings, before crushing a three-run home run in an eight-inning of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Quarterfinal at #1S Goldey-Beacom College. #4S Chestnut Hill College eliminated the top-seeded Lightning with a 9-6 victory that included a start (2.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) and a 3-for-6, five runs-batted-in (RBI) plate performance from Dietz. Junior
Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) pitched a majority of the game out of the Griffin bullpen (4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), which was anchored again by game-winner (6-0) sophomore
Dan Rockenbach (Holland, Pa.) (W, 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 K).
Chestnut Hill College (19-13) scored two runs in their first at-bat of the quarterfinal. Senior left fielder
Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) was beaned and moved to second on a sacrifice from junior catcher
Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.), before scoring on a single through the right side from junior center fielder
John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.), 1-0. Contoudis scored soon after, crossing on Dietz's single to right field, 2-0. Goldey-Beacom College (20-7) did the Griffins one better in the bottom of the opening frame, scoring three runs on two hits, a walk, and a pair of Scarlet and Gold errors, 3-2. The Lightning struck twice in the second inning, 5-2, and once in the fourth inning, 6-2, before Chestnut Hill College closed the gap with a run in the sixth inning, 6-3, two runs in the seventh inning, 6-5, three runs in the eighth inning, 8-6, and one more in the ninth, 9-6. All the while, Woltemate and Rockenbach backed up Dietz's start with seven innings of quality relief; 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.
Wild pitches helped the Griffins score in the sixth inning. The Scarlet and Gold's seventh-inning scores were products of a Dietz single to centerfield and a sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop
Nick Delacruz (South Brunswick, N.J.). In the eighth, it was a walk to Uzzell, a beaning of Barletta, and Dietz's three-run home run that put Chestnut Hill College ahead for good. Contoudis provided the Griffins' ninth-inning insurance score with a bases-loaded walk.
Chestnut Hill College advances to the CACC South Semifinal and will travel to #2S Thomas Jefferson University (Jefferson) on Thursday, May 13. First pitch is to be announced.
