Chestnut Hill College Opens CSFL Season With 28-7 Win Over Battlers

Conshohocken, Pa. - (9/17/2021) - For the first time since October 25, 2019, Chestnut Hill College (1-0, 1-0) took the turf at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium for some Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) action as the Scarlet and Gold hosted Alderson Broaddus University (0-1, 0-1) for a Friday night under the lights. Junior defensive back Colby Goldsmith (Phoenixville, Pa.) blocked the Battlers opening field goal attempt and sophomore defensive back Jehoshua Johnson (New Castle, Del.) returned it 70 yards to give Chestnut Hill College their first possession of the night at the 15-yard line. On third-and-15, sophomore quarterback Lonnie Cebulski (Jackson, N.J.) took it upon himself to score the first touchdown of the season with a keeper to the near side, 7-0 (9:33).

Freshman running back Anthony Broderick (Willow Grove, Pa.) scored on a late first-quarter drive (2:16) to advance the Chestnut Hill College advantage to 14-0. After halftime, Cebulski found freshman wide receiver Branden Moye (Woodbury, N.J.) on a nine-yard touchdown pass that increased the margin to 21-0 (4:04) late in the third quarter. The visitors finally answered with 10:55 remaining in the contest, 21-7, but by then it was too late as the Scarlet and Gold enjoyed a second Cebulski scoring rush with 5:54 on the game clock, 28-7.

Cebulski threw for 103 yards (8-of-15) and scampered for another 35 yards (13 carries) at the helm of the Scarlet and Gold offense. Broderick helped the Griffins ground game with 77 yards on 11 carries (7.0 yards/carry), while Moye and two other Griffins recorded a pair of receptions apiece. Sophomore wide receiver Ty Smith (Ruther Glen, Va.) was one of them (35 yards); he also returned a punt for 26 yards. Junior linebacker Luke Attanasi (Hammonton, N.J.) led the Chestnut Hill College defense with seven tackles (4 solo, 3 assisted) and a force fumble. Junior defensive back Ryan Jakeman (Cheltenham, Pa.) made a pair of his five tackles (3 solo, 2 assisted) in the Battlers backfield (2 sacks), while freshman defensive lineman Bryan Wall (Aberdeen, Md.) got home three times (3 sacks).

Chestnut Hill College visits the United States Naval Academy for Week 2 of their CSFL schedule. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24.
