Griffins Rally to Defeat Chargers for Fourth Straight Win

Trailing two sets to one, the Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team won the final two sets against Dominican University to extend their winning streak to a season high four matches as they defeated the Chargers 3-2 at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg New York Saturday afternoon.

The Griffins improve 9-9 on the season and 5-2 in in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games.  The Chargers fall to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in league play.

The Chargers took the opening set 25-20 while the griffins rallied to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 win in the second set.  Dominican again went on top with a 25-21 win in the third set before the Griffins rallied with a 25-20 win in set #4 before decisively winning the fifth set 15-6.

Mikayla Grimes led all players with a career-high 20 kills and recorded her team-leading sixth double- double of the season with 12 digs.  Henielys Ramos continued her solid play with 17 kills and a pair of aces.  Erika Dubosky also notched a double-double (her 4th of the season) with ten kills and 13 digs.  She also led the team with four service aces while Grimes added three.

Mia Caporellie led all players with 48 aces, one more than the entire Dominican team.  The junior setter also added ten digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

On the defensive side, Torrin Kelley led all players with 20 digs.  Angela April had three blocks while Kathryn Hanley added two.

The Griffins led early in the opening set, but five straight Charger points put the hosts in control 9-5.  Dominican continued to lead, opening a 19-13 advantage which was cut to one with five straight Chestnut Hill points 19-18.  The Griffins would come no closer as the Chargers won six of the final eight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 win.

Chestnut Hill played from behind for the better part of the second set, forcing six ties along the way.  With the set tied 17-17 a DU service error gave the Griffins their first lead of the set at 18-17.  Chestnut Hill still led 20-19 before they scored the final five points with the last three coming on kills from Ramos and Grimes and an ace from Dubosky to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 win.

Back and forth action in the third set resulted in seven ties and four lead changes before the Chargers pulled away late to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-21 win.  It was more of the same in the fourth set with seven ties and five lead changes, but the result was different as the Griffins rallies to break a 20-20 tie by scoring the final five points to win the set 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set.  Grimes had three kills in the final five volleys and Kelley added an ace.

Dominican scored the first two points of the final set before a Dubosky kill put the Griffins on the board.  A kill from Hanley tied the set at 3-3, then Kelley followed with an ace to put Chestnut Hill ahead 4-3.  Two straight Charger errors followed, adding to the Griffins lead.  DU's Elizabeth Perez (16 kills) made the score 6-4.  Ramos countered with a kill and then went back to serve.  The senior hitter served six straight points as the Griffins forced four Charger errors and Grimes added two kills to put CHC firmly ahead 13-4.  After the Chargers regained the serve, another error by the hosts brought the Griffins within a point of winning the match 14-5.  Perez added her final kill of the day to make the score 14-6 before serving the ball into the net to give the Griffins the win 15-6 in the set and the match, 3-2. 

Perez led the Chargers with 16 digs while Emmalyn LaPier added 11.  Linda Armao Peng led the team with 16 digs.

For the match, the Griffins had 60 kills in 158 attempts with 28 errors for an attack% of .203 (60-28-158) while the Chargers had 49 kills and an attack percentage of .207 (49-18-150).  The Griffins had 13 services aces to the chargers four and held a 70-56 advantage in digs. 

The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team will face a tough road test in their next match as they travel to Holy Family University to take on the Tigers who are currently in first place in the CACC South division.
