Broderick Tallies over 100 yards Rushing but Griffins Fall to Spartans

Anthony Broderick ran for a career high 106 yards but the Chestnut Hill College football team gave up 20 unanswered points in the final 17 minutes as saint Thomas Aquinas College rallied form a 14-7 deficit to defeat the Griffins 27-14 Saturday afternoon at A.A. Garthwaite Field in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins fall to 0-6 overall while the Spartans improve to 2-4.  It was the Griffins final home game of the season.

Prior to the game, the Griffins recognized their senior players and their accomplishments in a Chestnut Hill uniform.  Three players, senior receiver Schneider Juste, and senior outside linebackers Colby Goldsmith and Ryan Jakeman were honored along with student assistant Coach Carmen Deo.

Broderick amassed 68 of his 106 yards in the second half as the Griffins scored twice in the third quarter to erase a 7-0 deficit.  He opened the Griffins first drive of the third quarter with a 33-yard run which was followed by a 27-yard carry from Ira Baine to move the ball into the red zone and create a first-and-goal from the six-yard line.  Three plays later quarterback C.J. Small found Nick Ocampo open in the endzone for a three-yard touchdown catch.  Xavier Hendricks added the extra point and the game was tied at 7-7.

Chestnut Hill's defense held the Spartans to a three-and-out on their next possession and took over on their own 20-yard line following a STAC punt.  After some small gains and a Spartan penalty, Broderick broke free for a 35-yard run to again give the Griffins possession in the red-zone at the Spartan 15-yard line.  Two plays later, Baine had a 12-yard touchdown run with Hendricks converting the point after to give the Griffins a 14-7 with 6:20 left in the third quarter.

STAC fumbled the ensuing kickoff return and the Griffins had another chance in Spartan territory but a sack of Small on fourth down forced the Griffins to turnover the ball on downs which allowed the Spartans to drive 55 yards down the field in seven plays to score with 1:37 left.  STAC failed on the extra point attempt and the Griffins still led 14-13 as time ran out in the third quarter.

The Spartans scored on each of their first two drives in the fourth quarter to take a 27-14 lead.  The Griffins had one final drive with 3:06 left and advanced into the red zone again before turning the ball over on downs at the Spartans' 15-yard line with just 24 seconds left, allowing the visitors to run out the clock.

Chestnut Hill finished with more first downs (16-11), more total offense (271-252) and rushing yards (157-20).  STAC dominated the passing game as quarterback Ryan Kenny threw four touchdown passes and amassed a total of 232 yards with the Griffins only gaining 114 yards in the air.

The Griffins Sprint Football team will travel to West Virginia to face Alderson-Broaddus University on November 5 in their final game of the season.
