Milestones Reached as Griffins Hold off Rally From Cougars for Five-Set Win

Milestones were set as the Chestnut Hill College held off a rally from Caldwell university to earn a 3-2 win in their final home contest of the 2022 season.

The Griffins improve to 14-13 overall and 10-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.   Caldwell falls to 8-17 overall and 7-10 in league play.

Chestnut Hill took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-15 and were well on their way to completing the sweep before the Cougars rallied to take set three 25-23 and then forced as fifth set with a 25-22 win.  The Griffins then took the deciding set 15-11 to win the match.

Five of the Griffins six players recorded double doubles on the night with Mia Caporellie leading the way.  Caporellie recorded 49 assists and had 13 digs.  The junior setter became the first Griffins player to record 1,000 assists in a single season, reaching the milestone in the third set and proceeding to finish the match with  1,025 for the season.  Caporellie also equaled her career high with six kills (8 attacks with no errors.)

Mikayla Grimes led all players with 17 kills and 13 digs while Henielys Ramos added 16 kills and ten digs along with five aces.   Ramos' five aces give her 124 for her career, the most by any Griffins player in the program's division II era and fourth highest total all-time.

Angela April and Erika Dubosky also recorded double doubles with April notching 13 kills and 15 digs and Dubosky recording 11 kills and 11 digs.

Torrin Kelley wound up leading the Griffins with 17 digs as all six players recorded ten or more digs for the Griffins.

The Griffins scored the first five points of the match and led the first set wire-to-wire, taking their biggest lead at 12-5 on a Ramos kill.  Caldwell would come as close as three points 19-16 before the Griffins closed out the set with a 6-2 run to win 25-18.

An early kill by Dubosky followed by five straight points serving erased a 4-3 lead by the Cougars and put the Griffins ahead 9-4.  An 8-0 run by the Griffins saw the home squad open up a 20-8 lead enroute to the 25-15 set win.

Chestnut Hill opened a six-point lead midway through the third set, 16-9, only to see the Cougars rise up for a 14-3 run to take a 23-19 lead.  The Griffins pulled within one 24-23 before the Cougars closed the set out with a kill in the final rally to win 25-23 and make the score 3-1.

The Griffins had another chance to put the match away in the fourth set, leading 20-16 before Caldwell scored six straight points to take a 22-20 lead.  An error from Caldwell pulled the griffins within one 22-21 but that would be as close as they would come as the Cougars scored three of the final four points to win the fourth set 25-22.

In the deciding set, Caldwell jumped out to a 6-4 lead before the Griffins went on a 5-0 run, getting a pair of kills from April and another from Grimes while taking advantage of two Cougar attack errors to lead 9-6.  Caldwell closed within one 10-9 before a Caporellie kill started a min run of three straight points to give the Griffins a 13-9 lead.  Two CHC errors closed the gap to 13-11 before kills from Ramos and the final one from Kelley sealed the win for the Griffins.

The Chestnut Hill women's volleyball team has one final regular season remaining as they travel to face Jefferson University on Wednesday, November 2, 2022.  Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
