Huskies Come Away with a 70-69 Upset Win over Griffins

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team let their home opener slip away late as Bloomsburg University pulled off a 70-69 upset of the Griffins Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins fall to 2-1  while Bloomsburg improves to 1-0.

Bri Hewlett led the team with 15 points (6-10 FG) and seven rebounds while Siobhan Boylan chipped in 14 (5-14 FG, 3-8 3FG).  Abbey Spratt led the team with six assists.  Emily Chmiel grabbed five rebounds while Emily Sekerak and Leah Miller came off the bench to also grab five boards apiece.

The Griffins entered the final quarter with a 64-60 lead.  The Huskies opened the with a 6-0 run before Carter broke it making one of two free throws at the 5:56 mark.  Bloomsburg pushed the lead to three 68-65 but the Griffins continued to struggle both from the field and the foul line.  Single free throws from Boylan and Spratt made it a one-point game 68-67 with three minutes left.  BU's Abby Brown knocked down a jumper at the 2:00 minute mark to again put the Huskies up by three 70-67.  Miller made a layup with 52 seconds left, the Griffins first field goal of the quarter closing the gap to one 70-69 and the team had five chances to take the lead in the final f50 second but were unable to capitalize as the Huskies hung on for the upset win.

Chestnut Hill had built a 13-point lead in the second quarter with effective success from their press defense scoring 13 of their first 37 points off a Husky turnover to lead 37-24 at the 4:14 mark of the second.  Bloomsburg then got hot shooting, making five of their next six shots and added three free throws to complete a 14-0 run and take their first lead of the game 38-37 with 18 seconds left in the half.  Sara Tamoun broke the run with a putback with eight seconds left before the Huskies scored one final time to lead 40-39 at the break.

 Hewlett scored ten of her 15 points in the third quarter making all four shots (including a three pointer) and a free throw to help the Griffins take a 64-60 lead into the final quarter, a quarter which the Griffins struggled offensively being outscored 10-5 in the period.

For the game, the Griffins shot 44.3% while the Huskies finished shooting 49.1% from the field.  Both teams shot well from beyond the arc with the Griffins making nine of 21 three-point shots and the Huskies seven of 16.   The foul line proved to be a bit troublesome as Chestnut Hill shot an uncharacteristic low of 42.9% (6-14) while the Huskies converted 11 of 15 attempts.  The Griffins had a slight edge on rebound (35-33) committed eight fewer turnover (14-22) and held a huge 26-9 advantage in the points of turnovers category.

Katelin Starr and Ella Kale led the Huskies with 14 points apiece  while Alison Hileman added 12.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, November 20, 2022 when they host West Chester University at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
