Griffins Struggle in Fourth Quarter as West Chester Comes away with a win.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team's fourth quarter shooting woes continued for the second consecutive game as the griffins let a six point lead going into the final period slip away as West Chester University pulled out a 57-53 win Sunday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins fall to 2-2 overall while the golden Rams win their first game of the season and improve to 1-2.

Chestnut Hill made just three field goals in the final period  while shooting 25% from the field along with a 4-for-8 effort from the free throw line as West Chester outscored the Griffins 22-12 in the period.
Emily Chmiel was the lone Chestnut Hill player to reach double figures, scoring 14 points (7-12 FG).  Chmiel along with Bri rider led the team with seven rebounds.   Abbey Spratt had six assists.

Trailing by one at the half, the Griffins turned it a solid effort in the third quarter, including a strong 9-0 run in the final 2:20 to erase the one-point deficit and take a 41-35 lead into the third quarter.  Spratt started the run with a driving layup and Chmiel added a layup after a defensive stop.  Morgan Orloski added two free throws and Sparatt one more before the Griffins forced another turnover and Chmiel made the layup with seven seconds left to complete the run.

West Chester matched the Griffins run with their own 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter and take a 44-41 lead before Rider tied the game with a three point basket at the 6:58 mark.  Chestnut Hill went on to lead by four 52-48 with 1:45 remaining following two Lauren Crim free throws but did not get a single field goal attempt the rest of the way and missed three of four free throws.  The Golden Rams finished the game on a 9-1 spurt to seal the win.

For the game Chestnut Hill shot 35.8% (19-53) while West Chester shot 43.6% (24-55) from the field.  The Griffins made one more three-point basket (5-4) and had connected on five more free throws (10-5) with neither team hitting the 60% mark at the charity stripe (CHC 55.8%, WCU  50%). The Golden Rams did have a 40-32 rebounding advantage.

Michelle Kozicki led the Golden Rams with 18 points and ten rebounds, scoring 12 of her points in the fourth quarter alone.  Anna McTamney and Emily McAteer had 12 points apiece.

The Chestnut Hill Women's Basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 when they travel to face Kutztown University, their third consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent.
