Dominant Fourth Quarter Propels Griffins to Win over Golden Bears

A dominant fourth quarter by the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team led to a 68-57 win over Kutztown University Tuesday evening at Keystone Arena in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins snap a two-game losing streak with the win and improve to 3-2 overall.  Kutztown falls to 1-4.

Emily Chmiel led all scorers with 21 points (9-15 FG).  Kaitlyn Carter came off the bench to score a season high 14 points (6-10 FG, 2-2 3FG).  Lauren Crim and Emily Sekerak added eight and seven points respectively.  Bri Rider led all players with eight rebounds while Morgan Sterner had three assists.  Ten different players recorded at least one steal for the Griffins with Morgan Orloski and Chmiel grabbing two apiece.  Chmiel also had two blocks.

Kutztown trailed by two heading into the fourth quarter before Sydney Pierson opened the scoring with a three point basket to give the Golden Bears a brief 50-49 lead. The Griffins followed with a 10-0 run to take control of the game.   Bri Hewlett started the run with a layup off a turnover.  Chmiel scored the next five points before Carter capped the spurt with a three point basket.  After two free throws by the Golden Bears,  The Griffins went on another 9-1 run to complete a 19-3 uprising  to take a 68-53 with 46 seconds left before settling in for the 68-57 win.

Carter made five field goals in the third quarter, accounting for 11 of the Griffins 19 points as they held a two point lead 49-47 heading into the final period.  

The Griffins shot 77.8% in the second quarter with Chmiel shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, accounting for ten of the Griffins 14 points. Chestnut Hill maintained their lead the entire quarter but the Golden Bears managed to close within three by halftime, 30-27.

Crim's two three-point baskets in the final two minutes of the first quarter staked the Griffins to a 16-11 lead after ten minutes of action.   Six turnovers from the Golden Bears led to eight of the Griffins 16 points in the quarter.

For the game, the Griffins shot 45.5% from the field (25-55) while the Golden Bears shot 44%.  Chestnut Hill outrebounded Kutztown 35-23 including an 11-3 advantage on the offensive glass.  The Griffins outscored the Golden Bears 32-24 in the paint and 29-5 in bench points.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team will return to action on Sunday, November 27, 2022 when they travel to Sparkill, New York to face region rival Saint Thomas Aquinas College.
