Amir Warrick recorded his first double double of the season, leading five players in double figures as the Chestnut Hill college men's basketball team earned their biggest win of the young season, defeating regionally ranked University of New Haven 74-65 Sunday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins, now winners of three straight games, improve to 5-6 on the season. The Chargers, ranked d#4 in the most recent D2SIDA East Region Media Poll, drop to 6-3.
Warrick led all players with 17 points (7-15 FG) while grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds.Â
James Rider returned to action after missing a few games due to an injury to score 13 points (4-7 FG, 4-5 FT).Â
Conor Regan also scored 13 points (5-11 FG), while
Nigel Haughton chipped in 12 (4-7 FG).Â
Noah Charles contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. Haughton,
Trevonn Pitts and Charles had three assists apiece.
Charles had a buzzer beating basket at the end of the first half that gave the Griffins a 37-28 lead at halftime. Warrick added a layup in the opening minute of the second half to give CHC a double digit lead 39-28 before the Chargers came back and whittled the margin to seven 44-37 with 15:41 left. A layup from Warrick and a three-point basket from
Lucas Dunn started a 10-2 run by the Griffins that saw the home squad take their biggest lead of the game at 54-39 with 11:52 left. Chestnut Hill's lead fluctuated between 10 and 15 points over the next five minutes when the Chargers started to crawl back into the contest. New Haven executed a 7-2 run to pull within five, 67-62, at 3:21 but Charles buried a three-point bucket to push the lead back up to eight, 70-62 and the Chargers could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Chargers held a seven point lead of their own early in the first half, 13-6, just 4:27 into the game and still led 17-12 when the Griffins produced a 15-2 uprising to take a 27-20 lead with 5:44 left, a lead they would not relinquish. UNH closed within three 30-27 with 1:56 left but the Griffins scored seven of the final eight points to lead by nine at the half.
Quashawn Lane led the Chargers with 16 points while Davontrey Thomas added 12. Majur Majak had nine rebounds and four blocks to go along with seven points. Olawoye finished with nine points.
For the game, the Griffins shot 47.3% (26-55) from the field while holding New Haven to just 36.8% (21-57). Chestnut Hill held a huge 44-29 rebounding advantage including 11-7 on the offensive glass. The Griffins scored 23 second chance points to UNH's 7. The Chargers did convert 13 CHC turnovers into 15 points while the Griffins only had three points off seven UNH turnovers.
The Chestnut Hill college men's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, December 18, 2022, when they host Adelphi university in the final game before Christmas break. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
