Adelphi Defeats Griffins

Adelphi University used a strong second half to earn an 84-61 win over the Chestnut Hill college men's basketball team Sunday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins had their three game win streak snapped with loss and fell to 5-7 on the season.  The Panthers improved to 6-7 with the win.

Three Griffins reached double figures, contributing over 60% of the Chestnut Hill offense on the afternoon.  Amir Warrick scored a team-high 14 points (5-15 FG) while grabbing six rebounds.  Nigel Haughton added 13 points (5-11 FG), eight rebounds and three assists while Trevonn Pitts came off the bench to contribute 11 points (4-8 FG).  Neal Hill also had three assists.

Adelphi had a well balanced offense attack with six different players reaching double figures, led by Dayshaun Walton's 17 points (8-12 FG) and nine rebounds.

Leading by six at halftime, the Panthers scored the first five points of the second half to push their lead to double-digits 50-39.  Haughton brought CHC back with a pair of free throws and a layup to cut the deficit to seven 50-43 just 2:30 into the period.  AU's lead fluctuated between seven and 13 points over the next six minutes with the Griffins trailing by ten 58-48 with just under 12 minutes left when the Panthers embarked on an 11-4 run to go up by 17, 69-52 at the 9:20 mark.   A three-ball from Haughton followed by a pair of free throws from James Rider pulled CHC within 12, 69-57 with 7:23 left but Adelphi closed out the game with a 13-4 uprising to complete the 23-point rout, with the Griffins not scoring over the final 4:38.

Elijah Lewis (13 points); Mason Jackson (12), Matthew Price (11), Ronnie Silva (10) and Andrew Delaney (10) joined Walton in double figures for the Panthers.
Adelphi shot 49.2% from the field (30-61) while the Griffins made just 21 of 63 shots (33.3%).  Both teams connected on five three-point baskets.  Adelphi outscored Chestnut Hill 19-14 on the free throw line while the Griffins held a 39-37 rebounding edge, including a 16-10 effort on the offensive glass.  Both teams took fairly good care of the ball, with Adelphi committing just eight turnovers and Chestnut Hill ten.

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team returns to action on Thursday, December 29, 2022, opening conference play in earnest with a game at Sorgenti Arena against Holy Family University.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
