A solid fourth quarter defense by the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team enabled their offense to pull away and earn their first conference win of the season, defeating Bloomfield college 60-50 Saturday afternoon at the Bloomfield College Gym in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
The Griffins even their overall record at 6-6 and upped their record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference e games to 1-2. The Bears fall to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in league games. Entering the game, Chestnut Hill was ranked 25th in the country in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 56.2 points per game.
Avery White came off the bench to score a career high 14 points (2-5 FG, 9-10 FT) with a career best five assists while
Leah Miller, in her first start of the season scored ten points (4-7 FG) and grabbed a team high seven rebounds.Â
Siobhan Boylan added nine points and six rebounds while
Emily Chmiel also grabbed six rebounds. Â
The Griffins, leading 42-38 after three quarter, held the Bears scoreless for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter and without a field until there was just 1:36 left in the game. Â White and
Morgan Orloski opened the fourth quarter with baskets to extend the Griffins lead to eight 46-38 and Miller's layup with just under four minutes left put the Griffins back up by double figures 50-39. Miller added another layup about a minute later and the Griffins made eight free throws in the final three minutes to seal the win.
The Bears jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Griffins offense got on track with 11 straight points, capped with a
Sara Tamoun three-ball to take an 11-6 lead and force a BC timeout. Chestnut Hill added five more points to take a 16-6 lead after one quarter.
The Griffins extended their lead to 22-8 before the Bears scored 12 straight to cut the lead to two, 22-20 and later took a brief 27-26 lead before
Siobhan Boylan's three pointer gave the Griffins back the lead which later stood at 29-28 at the half and extended it to 42-38 heading into the final period.
Neither team shot exceptionally well for the game with the Griffins making 31.1% (19-61) and the Bears 26.6% (17-64) of their shots from the field.  The Griffins outscored the Bears 15-6 from beyond the arc and made three more free throws. Bloomfield held the rebounding edge, 51-48 and a 24-22 advantage on the offensive glass but the Griffins, who struggled to capitalize on their second chances in their last contest, scored 19 second chance points (BC – 17). Both teams committed 15 turnovers.
The Women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 when they host Goldey-Beacom College at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is at 1:00 p.m.
