Morgan Sterner scored a career-high 20 points as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team cruised to a 79-52 win over Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The win, the Griffins second straight conference victory, upped their record to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Lightning fall to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Sterner was the lone Chestnut Hill player to reach double figures. She connected on seven of ten shots from the field (including a 2-for-4 effort from beyond the arc while also making four of five shots from the free throw line. The sophomore guard also had four assists.
A trio of Griffin players added eight points apiece, led by junior
Kaitlyn Carter. Carter also had a game-high nine rebounds along with two blocks.
Siobhan Boylan and
Morgan Orloski also had eight points apiece coming off the bench.
Leah Miller added six points, eight rebounds and five assists while
Emily Chmiel also scored six points, grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks.
Avery White led all players with seven assists. Eleven different Chestnut Hill players scored four of more in the contest
The Griffins never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a quick 12-3 lead following a putback by
Emily Sekerak with 4:28 left. Boylan's three-ball made it a double-digit lead 15-5 before settling for a 20-11 lead heading into the second period.
A 7-2 run to open the second quarter, fueled by four points from
Abbey Spratt increased the lead to 27-13 just three minutes into the second quarter. The Lightning followed with an 11-4 run to close within seven 31-24 before layups from Miller and Boylan again pushed the lead into double figures. Carter added a three ball in the final seconds to give the Griffins a 38-26 lead at the half.
The third quarter was all Griffins as the scored 27 points in the period to take a commanding lead. Goldey-Beacom had cut the lead to nine 41-32 when the Griffins unleashed 11 straight points to push their lead to 20, 52-32 midway through the quarter and maintained the 20-point lead as the fourth quarter began.
The Lightning scored first to open the fourth quarter, closing within 18. The Griffins followed with a 14-2 uprising, capped by a
Sara Tamoun three-point bucket to take their biggest lead at 79-49 with 2:43 left. GBC's Alexis Harrison scored the final three points of the game, making the final 79-52.
Janiya Stevens led the Lightning with 11 points while Julie McCarron and Jhordan Gardner added nine and eight points respectively.
The Griffins held the Lightning to just 26.2% shooting (16-61) from the field while making 44.4% of their own shots (28-63). CHC's biggest advantage was rebounding as the Griffins outrebounded the Lightning 57-26, including a 19-10 advantage on the offensive glass . The Lightning committed six fewer turners but both teams scored 19 points apiece off the others miscues.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 7, 2022 with a game at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
