Nigel Haughton's basket with 3.6 seconds left capped off a rally late second half rally that saw the Chestnut Hill college Men's Basketball comeback from an 11-point deficit to defeat host Mercy College 66-64 Tuesday evening in Dobbs Ferry New York.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak by the Griffins as they improve to 3-6 on the season. Â The Mavericks fall to 2-6.
Haughton was one of four players in double figures for the Griffins with 14 points.
Noah Charles led Chestnut Hill with 15 points while
Trevonn Pitts recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Amir Warrick added ten points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Haughton's bucket capped a 19-6 run over the final 9:20 of the game that started with the Griffins trailing 58-47. A layup from Pitts and a three-point field goal from
Donald Imo quickly cut the lead to six 58-52. After two free throws from Mercy, The Griffins exploded with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 62-60 with 4:12 remaining. The two teams quickly exchanged baskets before both team's stopped scoring for nearly three minutes with the Griffins still clinging to a 66-62 lead.  Chestnut Hill turned the ball over under the Maverick basket with 22 seconds left, paving the way for a game tying shot with 17.6 seconds left.  Haughton brought the ball up himself and drove down the left side and banked in a fadeaway for the eventual game winner with 3.6 seconds left. Mercy's last ditch three point shot fell short as the Griffins held on for the 66-64 win.
Mercy led the entire first half and was up by as many as 12, 31-19 late in the period before a 10-2 Griffins run closed the gap to four 33-29 with just under two minutes left. Mercy closed out the half up by six 37-31. The Mavericks opened the second half with a 7-2 run to again take a double-digit lead 44-33 before the Griffins countered with nine straight points to pull within two 44-42. Mercy followed the Griffins run with a 13-5 spurt of their own to go up by 11, 58-47 before the Griffins started their final push.
For the game, the Griffins shot 40.6% (28-69) from the field while the Mavericks made 24 of 62 shots (38.7%). Chestnut Hill was also more efficient from beyond the three-point arc connecting on six of 15 shots (40%) from three point range (MC 4-19, 21.1%). Mercy outrebounded the Griffins 44-40, but committed five more turnovers (17-12).
The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Sorgenti Arena for the next game, taking on nearby Gwynedd Mercy University on December 7, 2022.
