Griffins Come Up Short Against Bloomfield

A late rally by the Chestnut Hill Men's Basketball Team fell short as the Griffins dropped a 64-60 decision to Bloomfield college Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia.

The loss drops the Griffins record to 11-9 overall and 8-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Bears improve to 8-13 overall and 6-5 in league play.
Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md.) led the Griffins with 14 points, ten rebounds and five assists.  Noah Charles (Columbia, Md.) came off the bench to score 11 points while MJ Iraldi (West Deptford, N.J.) added ten points and six assists.  James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points.

Bloomfield steadily built a lead in the second half and pushed it to double digits 56-46 with just 2:38 left to play.  Rider started a 7-2 run with a layup-and-one that saw the Griffins cut the lead in half, 58-53 with just 1:09 remaining.  A pair of Bloomfield free throws pushed the lead back to seven 62-55 with 23 seconds left.

Charles followed with a layup and then a steal that led to a three-point basket (five points in seven seconds) to make it a one possession game, 62-60.  Forced to foul, Bloomfield's Andres Fulgencio made two free throws to seal the win.  Rider's three-point shot with time expiring was off the mark.

Early in the game the Griffins used a 12-5 run to take a 14-8 lead just 4:30 into the contest.  Neither team scored for the next four minutes until the bears made four straight free throws to pull within two and then added a three-point basket following a Haughton Layup to close within one 16-15 just past the midway mark.  A 7-3 run by the Bears gave the visitors a 22-19 lead before the Griffins rallied to tie the game with a 7-2 spurt evening the score at 26-26 with 1:37 left in the half.  Bloomfield added two more free throws in the final minute to take a 28-26 lead at the half.

Chestnut Hill took a one-point lead, 29-28, via a traditional three-point play from Iraldi in the opening minute of the second half.  BC's Tyrek Battle-Holley took the lead right back with a three-point basket 31-29 and the Bears added another basket to go up by four 33-29.  The Griffins came within two several times over the next six minutes, the last at 43-41 before the Bears embarked on a 13-5 run to take their biggest lead at ten, 56-46 with 2:38 to go.

Neither team broke the 40% mark shooting-wise with the Bears making 38.9% (21-54) of their shots and the Griffins 31.5% (23-73).  Chestnut Hill was just 6-for-28 from beyond the arc and 8-for-12 from the free throw line.  Bloomfield doubled up the Griffins on the charity stripe making 16 of 19 free throws while also hitting six three pointers (6-17).  Bloomfield also held a slight 46-40 edge on the glass.

The Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team will begin a string of tough road contests on Wednesday February 9, 2022, when they travel to face nationally ranked Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York.  This game is a rescheduled contest that was postponed on January 2.  The Griffins will also face Caldwell University and Jefferson University before returning home for their final two home games of the season beginning February 19
