Griffins complete Sweep of Florida Memorial with a 19-5 Win over the Lions

The Chestnut Hill college Baseball team ended their Spring trip to Florida on a high note, completing a three-game sweep of Florida Memorial University with a 19-5 win over the Lions.

The 19 runs are the most scored by the Griffins since plating 22 against Lincoln University in 2019.  Chestnut Hill improves to 5-8 with the win and finishes the nine game Florida swing with a 4-5 record.  Florida Memorial falls to 10-9.

Andrew Dietz hit a grand slam home run and finished the game with five RBI while Sam Barletta added a two-run home run and a triple.  John Contoudis and Ian Labrador had two hits and two RBI apiece.  Seven of the Griffins 13 hits went for extra bases.

Jake Schweiker earned his first win of the season in relief for the Griffins, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing just three hits while striking out two.

Connor Evans' sacrifice fly in the first put the Griffins on the board.  The Griffins sent eight men to the plate in the second inning as Dietz hit his third home run of the season – this one a grand slam with two outs to make the score 6-0.

The Lions came roaring back in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to cut the Griffins lead to 6-5 before the Griffins put the game out of reach with a nine-run fourth inning.
Barletta tripled to lead off the inning and later scored on an infield error.  Labrador's one out single scored Contoudis (who reached on a walk) and Justin Geiger followed with a single to score Evans.  Nate O'Donnell followed with Chestnut Hill's third straight single, scoring Labrador and R.J. Huth.  Geiger then scored on another infield error and Barletta, batting for the second time drew a walk.  Contoudis then delivered a two-run triple and Dietz followed with a single for his fifth RBI of the afternoon and a 15-5 Griffin lead.   Dietz becomes just the eighth player in program history to record five or more RBI in a single game.

Huth was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth and scored on Labrador's triple.  Labrador then scored on Geiger's sacrifice fly.  Three batters later, Barletta delivered a two run home run to round out the Griffins scoring.

Isias Espiritusantos took the loss for the Lions allowing four runs in 1.1 innings pitched.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 with a game at Bloomsburg University.
