Shortstop
Connor Evans became the first freshman in Chestnut Hill College baseball history to record five hits in a single game as the Griffins lost 15-12 in ten innings on a walkoff home run in the tenth inning Wednesday afternoon at Bloomsburg University.
The loss drops the Griffins record to 5-9 overall while Bloomsburg improves to 10-7.
Evans (Hermitage, Pa.) batted six times in the ten inning loss, recording a single, three doubles and a home run to become the first freshman and the fifth player overall in the 15-year history of the program to have five hits in a single game. Evans' three doubles also ties a school record for most doubles in a game (most recently accomplished by
Ameir Uzzell in 2019). The freshman shortstop also recorded four RBI on the afternoon.
Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) also had four RBI along with two hits.Â
Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) hit a solo home run and drove in two runs while
Ian Labrador (Miami, Fla.)Â had a two run-home run.Â
Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) and
Justin Geiger (Phoenixville, Pa.) also had two hits apiece.
Bloomsburg had rallied to tie the score at 12-12 with two runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. The Griffins loaded the bases in the top half of the tenth with an Evans' double a walk and a hit batter with just one out but failed to get a run home. Bloomsburg put two runners on with one out in the bottom half of the tenth before BU's Kyle OFier took a first pitch and launched it over the fence in right field for the game winning three-run home run.
Jake Schweiker (Langhorne, Pa.), who pitched to the first three batters in the tenth, took the loss while BU's Matt Vernieri earned the win in relief.
The Griffins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead off an RBI single from Dietz, an RBI double from Evans and Labrador's two-run home run in the first. Bloomsburg came right back and tied the score in the bottom of the first until the Griffins again scored four times  in the second inning.
Dietz had his second RBI of the game and Evans followed with a three-run home run to account for the Chestnut Hill runs. The Griffins added solo runs in the third and the sixth and Dietz drove in his final two runs in the seventh to put the Griffins up 12-7 before the Huskies began their comeback.
Bloomsburg scored twice in the seventh and added two more in the eighth and tied the game in the ninth leading up to their extra inning walkoff win.
The Chestnut Hill Baseball team will be back in action on Saturday, March 19, 2022 for their home opener against Lincoln University. The doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pennsylvania. Time and location could change depending upon weather and field conditions.
