Andrew Dietz struck out 14 batters, tying the school record for strikeouts in a game as the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team won the first game of their doubleheader against Lincoln University 12-2 Friday afternoon at Maplezone Sports Institute in Aston, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins went on to complete the sweep as
Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) (1-2) threw a complete game shutout as the Griffins prevailed 6-0 in the second game. The Griffins improve to 7-9 with the win.
Dietz's (Warrington, Pa.) 14 strikeouts ties the school record set back in 2018 by
Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) against Post on May 1, 2018. The senior hurler allowed just three hits and two earned runs while walking one.
Offensively, Dietz also had three hits in the opener, including a pair of doubles, along with a stolen base.
Justin Geiger (Phoenixville, Pa.) also had three hits in game one, including a triple Geiger drove in three runs while
Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) (2-3) added two RBI .
Dunnuck added a two-run home run in game two and
Ian Labrador (Miami, Fla.) added a double and a triple as Chestnut Hill made a winner out of Woltemate for the first time this season.
The Griffins batted around in the first inning of the opener, scoring four times. Dietz had an RBI double in the second to push the lead to 5-0 and increased the margin to 8-0 in the third via Dunnuck's RBI double, Geiger's triple and an infield groundout by
Zach Ahmed (Las Vegas, Nev.).
The Lions got a run on the board on a sacrifice fly in the top half of the fifth inning and the Griffins added two more via errors in the bottom half of the inning to lead 10-1. A home run by Lincoln's Alex Jones accounted for the Lions only other run of the day with the Griffins adding two more in the bottom of the sixth inning to round out the scoring.
Dunnuck put the Griffins on the board in game two with a two-run home run with one out in the second inning. Chestnut Hill scored on an error in the third and added three more runs in the fifth inning.
R.J. Huth (Fairless Hills, Pa.) scored on an infield groundout by
Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) and Labrador scored Geiger, who had doubled with a triple .
Sam Barletta's (Royersford, Pa.) sacrifice fly brought Geiger home with the final Chestnut Hill run.
Woltemate struck out eight batters in the complete game effort walking none and giving up just four hits on the afternoon.
The Chestnut Hill college Baseball team will be back in action on Sunday, March 20, 2022 when they host the College of Staten Island. The doubleheader will be at DaVincent field on the campus of LaSalle University. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
