Andrew Dietz etched his name in the Chestnut Hill college Baseball record book once again, hitting two home runs and becoming the school's all-time leading home run hitter as the Griffins salvaged a split in their doubleheader with the College of Staten Island, winning game two 13-5 at Hank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Chestnut Hill dropped the opener 15-1. With the split the Griffins improve to 8-10 on the season. The College of Staten Island is now 6-8.
Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) entered the day tied for the Griffins all-time home run lead with Mike Knipe (2008-11) with ten homes runs apiece. The senior first basemen wasted no time in game two, hitting a two-out solo blast over the fence in centerfield in the first inning to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning Dietz connected for his second home run of the game and 12
th of his career, hitting a one-out solo shot over the right field fence, giving the Griffins the lead for good, 6-5. With the two home runs Dietz becomes just the ninth player in program history to hit two home runs in a single game. The home run was also his third hit of the day, giving him 150 hits for his career, the 11
th player in program history to achieve this milestone.
Dietz finished the game reaching base again after getting hit by a pitch in the sixth and later scoring on
Corbin Dunnuck's (Mohnton, Pa.) double. Dietz finished the game going 3-for-3 at the plate and also had two stolen bases. Dunnuck and
Connor Evans (Hermitage, Pa.) also had multiple hit games. Dunnuck hit a two run home run in the first, his tenth of his career to move him into a tie with Knipe for second on the all-time list behind Dietz. He added the two-run double in the sixth to finish the day with two hits and four RBI. Evans also had two hits, a triple in the first and a two-run single in the sixth.
Dan Rockenbach (Holland, Pa.) earned the win in relief, upping his record to 2-0 on the season. Rockenbach pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three in relief of starter
Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) who pitched brilliantly through four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth.
The home runs by Dietz and Dunnuck helped stake the Griffins to a 4-0 lead in the first. Â Â The legs
of John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) produced the fifth run after stealing third and coming home on a throwing error by the CSI catcher.
The Dolphins got on the board with a solo run in the fourth and took advantage of several opportunities provided by the Griffins in the form of walks, hit batsman and a throwing error to score four more runs in the fifth, tying the game at 5-5.
Following the Dietz home run in the bottom of the fifth, the Griffins looked to tack on a few insurance runs in the sixth.Â
Justin Geiger (Phoenixville, Pa.) led off with a walk and
Greg Sylvester (Trevose, Pa.) reached on a sacrifice who moved the runner to second as the throw from the fielder to second was not in time. Â
Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) was hit by a pitch and
R.J. Huth (Fairless Hills, Pa.) drew a bases loaded walk to bring in a run.Â
Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) singled through the right side to score two more runs and Evans plated an additonal two runs four batters later with a single through the left side. Dunnuck rounded out the scoring with a double off the scoreboard in left field scoring Evans and Dietz and making the score 13-5.
Rockenbach struck out the first two batters in the Dolphins final at-bat before giving up a weak single. He then got Anthony Sutera to pop up to Dietz at first to end the game.
In the opener, six first inning walks and a hit batter by three Griffin pitchers provided the Dolphins ample opportunity to take a big lead, which they did scoring ten runs on five hits. The first was a leadoff inside the park home run to center field by Jake Myers.
Staten Island added two more in the second a solo run in the fourth and two more in the seventh to give them a 15-0 lead before the Griffins got on the board as Evans scored on Dunnuck's infield groundout in their final aty-bat.
Evans had two of the Griffins' six hits including a double in the seventh inning.Â
Aiden Nesemeier (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and O'Donnell also doubled.  Starter
Michael Kiefer (Blue Point, N.Y.) took the loss falling to 0-2 on the season.
Ryan Kehoe (1-0) earned the complete game win for the Dolphins.
