John Contoudis led four players with multiple hits as the Chestnut Hill college baseball team won their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener, defeating University of the Sciences 12-2 at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Griffins improve to 9-10 overall and 1-0 in CACC games. The Devils fall to 6-13 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) banged out four hits two of them doubles and drove in two runs while
Connor Evans (Hermitage, Pa.), Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and
Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) had two hits apiece. Evans also had four RBI on the afternoon, his third four-RBI game of the season. Contoudis and
Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) also drove in two apiece.
Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) earned his second win of the season (2-2) pitching six innings while allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out five.
An error in the first inning gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead and Chestnut Hill added another when Contoudis scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Evans.Â
Back-to-back doubles from Barletta and Contoudis followed by a two-out single from Evans gave the Griffins a 4-0 lead in the third before the Devils cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom half of the third
Chestnut Hill had their big inning in the fifth, scoring five times on just one hit. Evans drove in the first run with a fielder's choice with the bases load. Dunnuck was hit by a pitch to force in another run and
R.J. Huth drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 7-2.Â
Justin Geiger (Phoenixville, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to bring home another run and
Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) delivered a sacrifice fly to score Dunnuck with the fifth Griffin run of the inning. Chestnut Hill's only hit of the inning was a Contoudis double early in the inning.
The Griffins tacked on a solo run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Dunnuck delivered a two-out single to score Dietz in the sixth and Dietz and Evans had back-to-back RBI singles in the seventh.
Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) relieved Hughes and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to preserve the win.
The Chestnut Hill baseball team is back in action on Saturday, March 26, 2022 when they travel to face Bloomfield College. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
