Griffins Hit Four Home Runs in Opener vs. Bloomfield

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team hit four home runs in a game for just the second time in program history as they defeated Bloomfield College 10-6 in the opening game of the Central Atlantic collegiate conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon At West Side Park in Newark, New Jersey.

Bloomfield took advantage of two errors in their final at-bat in game two as they came from behind with a walkoff home run in the seventh inning to defeat the Griffins 9-7 to earn a split of the two-game series.

The Griffins are 10-11 overall  and 2-1 in CACC games.  Bloomfield is now 7-12 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Andrew Dietz and Ian Labrador hit two home runs apiece, joining Alec Craig and Matthew Owens as the only teammates to hit two home runs in the same game.  Craig and Owens accomplished this against Wilmington in April 2018 which is also the only other time the Griffins had a four-home run game as a team.  Dietz is also just the second player in program history to hit a pair of home runs in two different games during the season, joining Eric Gilham who did the same in 2019.  Dietz has also tied Owen's single season home run record with seven so far this season.

Dietz also tossed a complete game, striking out six while walking one.

In the first inning of the opener, Dietz belted a two-run home run putting the Griffins on top early.  Connor Evans followed with a single and later scored on an error after stealing second to make the score 3-0.

Labrador connected in the second inning, a two-run shot to make the score 5-1 and Dietz blasted his second of the day the following inning to give the Griffins a commanding 7-1 lead.

Bloomfield manufactured two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 7-3.  John Contoudis added his second hit of the game to score Labrador to up the lead to 8-3 in the top half of the fourth.  Labrador then added his second home run of the day in the sixth, a second two-run blast, to give Chestnut Hill a 10-3 lead.

Dietz gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh but struck out the final two batters to earn his third win of the season against one loss, tying him for the league lead.

In game two, Labrador hit his third home run of the afternoon to lead off the game, staking the Griffins to an early 1-0 lead.

Bloomfield came back with two runs in the second to regain the lead 2-1.  Contoudis had an RBI single in the third and Labrador scored on a wild pitch as the Griffins regained the lead 3-2.

A sacrifice fly from Evans made the score 4-2 and Contoudis scored on a wild pitch and an error to give the Griffins a three-run lead 5-2, before Bloomfield answered with a solo run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.

Dietz and Evans drove in runs in the top of the seventh to give the Griffins a 7-5 lead before the Bears took advantage of two dropped fly balls to score a run  before Angel Murray hit his second home run of the game to give the Bears a 9-7 win.

Pat Woltemate took the loss falling to 1-3 on the season.  He struck out seven over 6.2 innings and walked one.

The Griffins are back in action on Sunday, March 27, 2022 when they host University of the Sciences at Hostelley Field for their Home opener of the season.  First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
