The Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team returned to action Tuesday night as they hosted Molloy College at Victory Field. Griffin attackers
Liam McCann and
Maurice Kelly scored three goals apiece as Chestnut Hill earned their fourth win of the season, defeating the Lions 12-5.
The Griffins improve to 4-4 with the win while the Lions fall to 3-7.
McCann (Edmonton, Alberta) and
Kelly (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) were among seven different Griffin players to score on the evening as the team overcame an early 1-0 deficit with six unanswered goals in the second and first minutes of the third periods to take control of the game en route to their victory. Kelly also added two assists to finish with five points, while McCann and
Ben Revak (Aston, Pa.) (1 goal, 3 assists) had four points apiece.
Austin Jones (Courtice, Ontario) recorded 11 saves in goal as he improved to 4-2 on the season.
Zach Schultz (Selbyville, Del.) won 17 of 18 faceoffs and recorded 15 ground balls to lead the Griffins.
Connor O'Donnell (Manchester, Md.) led the team with three caused turnovers.
Molloy opened the scoring with a goal at the 4L42 mark of the first period before Kelly evened the score, taking a pass from McCann at the 13:44 mark of the second period to tie the game at 1-1. A little over six minutes later McCann took a pass from Kelly and put the Griffins ahead to stay with the second of six straight goals.
J.R. Howell (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Kelly added goals less than a minute apart with just under five minutes left in the second quarter. and Revak scored with 1:26 left to put the Griffins ahead 5-1 at halftime.
Mike Smith (Center Valley, Pa.) opened the third quarter with a man-up goal just 20 seconds into the period to make the score 6-1. Molloy scored twice to pulled within three, 6-3 before
Zachary Whalen (Emmaus, Pa.) sent a shot past Molloy goalie Christian Michael to make the score 7-3. A man-up goal from the Lions brought the visitors back within three 7-4 before the Griffins added two more goals; one from McCann another from Smith, both unassisted to up the score to 9-4. Another man up goal in the final two minutes of the period from Molloy made the score 9-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kelly notched his third goal of the game off a pass from Revak with 10:25 left, making the score 10-5. McCann then followed with a rare man-down goal at the 6:04 mark to make the score 11-4 for his third goal of the game. The man-down goal was only the 18
th such goal in the 13-year history of the program
. Mickey Holland (Brick, N.J.) tallied the final goal of the night with just 2:29 remaining in the game.
