Connor Evans had five hits on the afternoon and
Justin Geiger hit a home run as the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team split a conference doubleheader with University of the Sciences, losing the opener 11-9 and winning the nightcap 9-1 Sunday at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins improve to 11-12 overall and 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. USciences is now 9-14 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Evans had three hits in the opener and added two more in game two to raise hit batting average to .451, the second highest in the CACC. He now leads the league in hits with 37 on the season. Geiger hit a solo home run in the opener and finished with two hits in the game.Â
Nate O'Donnell had three hits in the opener, including a double and added a single in the nightcap.
Thomas Hughes earned his second win over USciences in six days, winning game two in a complete game effort. The senior hurler allowed just five hits, walked one and struck out eight over seven innings worked.Â
Dan Rockenbach took the loss in relief in game one, pitching the final six innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) while striking out seven.
The Griffins struck first in the nightcap, as
Ian Labrador walked, stole second and went to third on a passed ball before
John Contoudis grounded out to bring him home. Chestnut Hill took advantage of a bases-loaded infield error in the second inning as Geiger, O'Donnell and Labrador all drove in runs without the benefit of a hit  to take a 4-1 lead.
O'Donnell delivered a one-out RBI single up the middle to score two more runs in the fourth and later came home on
Sam Barletta's RBI double to break the game open and take a 7-1 lead.
Andrew Dietz doubled and scored on
Zach Ahmed's two out single in the fifth and later scored the Griffins' final run on a wild pitch.
USciences got their only run on an Evan Sinclair home run in the second.
In the opener the Devils belted two home runs and four doubles as they came out ahead of the Griffins in an offensive battle 11-9.
Dietz doubled to score Barletta in the first and Labrador was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Griffins an early 2-0 lead. Sciences got three back in the top half of the third. Labrador also saved a run with a great throw from centerfield to Barletta behind the plate to tag out Sinclair trying to score from second on a single.
Adam Estrada hit a home run to give USciences a 4-2 lead before the Griffins rebounded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on RBI singles from Barletta and Evans and an infield error to take a 5-4 lead.
The Devils added single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 6-5 lead and added four more in the seventh to take their biggest lead of the day, 10-5.
Geiger led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run and O'Donnell followed with a single was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on Contoudis' single. Contoudis later scored on an Evans double with Dietz going to third base. Dietz then scored on an error off a failed pickoff attempt of Evans to pull Chestnut Hill within one 10-9.
Vince Cammisa homered in the eighth to give the Devils an 11-9 lead in the eighth. Chestnut Hill had two hits in each of their last two at-bats but could not plate any additional runs as the Devils prevailed 11-9.
The Chestnut Hill baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 when they host Goldey-Beacom college in a single game at Hostelley field. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
