Labrador Strikes Walkoff Hit vs. Lightning

Ian Labrador delivered a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning that lifted the Chestnut Hill College baseball team to a 2-1 win over Goldey-Beacom college Wednesday afternoon at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins improve to 12-12 overall and 4-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Lightning fall to 10-18 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Labrador (Miami, Florida), a late inning defensive replacement in the outfield, came up to the plate in the ninth inning with one out and senior Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) on third base following a leadoff double and moving to third on an infield groundout.  The freshman outfielder promptly delivered, hitting the first pitch offered by the Lightning's Michael Awtry through the left side of the infield to easily score Dietz with the winning run.  For Labrador it was his second hit in two trips to the plate on the afternoon.

The walkoff hit made a winner out of reliever Dan Rockenbach  (Holland, Pa.)( (3-1) who is now tied with teammates Dietz and Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) along with two others for the league lead in wins. Rockenbach pitched two innings of relief, allowing just a walk and single in the eighth inning while striking out two.  Starter Mike Kiefer (Blue Point, N.Y.) threw five solid innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five.  Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) retired all five batters he faced before yielding to Rockenbach.

Dietz drove in the Griffins' first run with a double in the bottom of the first inning, scoring John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) who also doubled.  The senior first baseman finished with three hits to raise his batting average to a league leading .463.

Chestnut Hill held onto the 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when the Lightning tied the scored on Garrett Musey's RBI double down the left field line.

Goldey-Beacom pitcher Anthony pitched eight solid innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out four.  He did not allow a run past the Griffin's first inning

The two teams put zeros up on the board the rest of the way until Labrador's ninth inning heroics.

The Chestnut Hill college Baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 2, 2022 when they host Dominican College in a CACC doubleheader at Hostelley Field.  First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
