Griffins Earn Walkoff Win over Chargers but Fall in Game Two

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team recorded their second consecutive walkoff win in the opening game of Saturday's twinbill against Dominican College, 2-1  but lost to the Chargers in the nightcap 15-6 to earn in split at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins are now 13-13 overall and 5-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Games.  The Chargers are also 5-3 in CACC contests and are now 8-18 overall.

The opener was a pitcher's duel between Dominican's Brendan Turton and Chestnut Hill's Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.).  The two hurlers matched zero-for-zero on the scoreboard for six innings with Burton allowing just one hit and striking out seven and Dietz two hits and striking out five.

Turton was lifted after six innings and 94 pitches while Dietz remained and completed the game, tossing 91 pitches in eight innings.

Robert Liriano gave up a hit in the seventh by CHC's Aiden Nesemeier (Cinnaminson, Pa.) but the Griffins failed to score.  Dietz gave up a single in the eighth to Bryant Bassett who later scored on a pair of errors to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

Ian Labrador (Miami, Fla.) led off the bottom of the eight with a single.  Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) went to bunt and sacrifice Labrador to second but the Charger third basemen overthrew the ball to first allowing Labrador to score the tying run and Barletta to race to third.  Following an infield out, Dietz was intentionally walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position.  Lirano then tossed a wild pitch and Barletta raced home with the winning run.

Dietz earned the complete game win improving to 4-1 overall.

The second game was close through the first four innings with the Griffins taking an early 1-0 lead only to have the Chargers tie in their following at-bat. That same scenario continued through the second and third innings.

A John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) sacrifice fly plated the Griffins first run in the opening frame and Nesemeier blasted a two-run home run to left field in the second to give Chestnut Hill a 3-1 lead.  The Chargers tied it again on Richie Paulino's first home run of the game at 3-3.

A bases loaded infield error scored Connor Evans (Hermitage, Pa.) and gave the Griffins a 4-3 lead after four innings.  Things fell apart after that as the Chargers exploded for ten runs off four Griffin pitchers in the fifth inning to blow the game open 13-4.  Griffin pitchers walked seven batters in the inning and  Paulino hit his second home run of the game and then drove in three more with a bloop single that hugged the foul line.

Evans scored for the third time in the game in the sixth inning, coming home on Zach Ahmed's (Las Vegas, Nevada) sacrifice fly.  R.J. Huth (Fairless Hills, Pa.) drove in Barletta with the Griffins final run.

Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) took the loss, falling to 3-2 on the season.  Evans reached base all three times with two hits and a walk.  He also stole three bases.

The Chestnut Hill Baseball team resumes conference play on Sunday, April 3, 2022 when they travel south to play Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware.  First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
