In the second game of their three-game series with Florida Tech, the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team was defeated by the Panthers 18-8 on Saturday afternoon
Â
The Griffins drop to 1-5, while the Panthers improve to 14-5 overall.
Â
Offensively, freshman infielder
Connor Evans and senior pitcher
Andrew Dietz lead the way for the Griffins, both with two runs batted in. Freshman
Justin Geiger also plated one run. On the mound, Dietz was saddled with the loss.
Â
The game got off to a quick scoring start in the top of the first as
R.J. Huth scored on a wild pitch, and Dietz then singled to drive in
Sam Barletta, and take a 2-0 lead. Florida Tech responded in the latter half of the inning by plating three runs.
Â
The Panthers then did the majority of their damage in the third and fourth innings, scoring a combined 15 runs and 15 hits to take a 18-2 lead.
Â
The Griffins continued to battle despite the score line, and following the fourth inning, greatly turned up their play in the field. Senior pitcher
Brian Egolf entered in relief in the bottom of the fifth and only allowed two hits through three innings of pitching, striking out two and walking none.
Â
In the sixth, the Griffins were able to breakthrough offensively and add two more runs to their tally. After getting runners to second and third, third-baseman Geiger grounded out to third base, allowing Dietz to score, and
Anthony Coombs to advance. This was followed by a
Josh Polon walk, and Coombs crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Â
In the seventh, the Griffins totaled three hits, which included a Dietz double, which scored Huth and an Evans single to right center for two RBIs. Another run was scored on a bases loaded walk to Polon, making the score 18-8.
Â
Although the score would remain the same, Chestnut Hill kept up their stout defense. Senior pitcher
Jordan DeChurch took the ball in the eighth inning and did not allow a hit to finish off the game.
Â
Jack Nagy led the way for Florida Tech with five RBIs, while Brett Parrish and Alec Eldridge each totaled three hits. Aiden Pryzgoda took home the win.
Â
The Griffins will square off against Florida Tech one last time on Sunday, March 6
th at 1 p.m., before travelling to Miami Shores to face off with Barry University.
