Griffins Lose a Tough Match at Roberts Wesleyan

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse Team dropped a tight decision to Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday by a score of 13-12.

Senior Maurice Kelly continued his strong play, following up his previous three goal and four assist performance with four goals and one assist. Junior attacker Mike Smith and sophomore midfielder Liam McCann also scored twice for the Griffins, while goalie Austin Jones made 15 saves.

It was the Griffins who applied the pressure early, taking a 3-0 lead before a Hunter Lemieux goal for Roberts Wesleyan made it 3-1 to end the 1st quarter. Kelly got on the scoresheet for the first time with 13:47 left in the 2nd quarter, and with back-to-back goals by McCann and one by Zachary Whalen, the Griffins took a 7-4 lead into the halftime break.

The Redhawks were the aggressor to begin the 2nd half of play, scoring two quick goals before Kelly could respond with one of his own. However, the Griffins were outscored 4-2 in the 3rd quarter and a late Nate Maloney goal saw the Redhawks pull to within one, 9-8, heading into the final period of play.

Smith quickly restored the Griffins' two goal lead with 13:47 left in the action, before the Redhawks scored three unanswered to take a 11-10 lead. The Griffins responded to the call, as Zack Jastrzebski and Kelly scored goals just 16 seconds apart to go back in front, 12-11 with three minutes to play. However, Roberts Wesleyan was able to tie the score with 2:49 remaining, and with just 1:10 to go, Nate Maloney scored what would be the deciding goal, as the game finished 13-12 in favor of the Redhawks.

Ried Jackowski lead the way for the Roberts Wesleyan as he scored four goals. Jordon Deats added three, while Nate Maloney and Hunter Lemieux each contributed two.

The Griffins will face D'Youville College on Wednesday, March 9th, in Buffalo, NY, before returning home to take on St. Michael's on Saturday, March 12th, at 7 p.m. at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill, Pa.
