Contoudis Records 150th Career Hit as Griffins are Swept by Lighting

Senior John Contoudis was one of three Chestnut Hill College baseball players to hit a home run and became the 12th player in program history to record 150 career hits as the Griffins were swept by Goldey Beacom college Sunday afternoon at Doyle field in Hockessin, Delaware.

The Lightning broke a 7-7 tie in the eight inning of game one to earn a 15-9 win and completed the sweep with a 12-5 win in game two.

Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) entered the day needing two hits to reach the 150-hit milestone and after an RBI single in the second inning of game one, reached the mark with a solo home run in the ninth inning.  He added a single in game two and now has 150 for his career.

Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) went 3-for-3 in the opener with two walks and stole two bases bringing his league leading total to 14.  Dietz also raised his batting average to .441 to take over the top spot in the league.

Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) also went 3-for-3 and a walk and scored twice in the opener.  He added two more hits in the nightcap to finish the day with five hits in the two games.

Ian Labrador (Miami, Fla.) and R.J. Huth (Fairless Hills, Pa.) also hit home runs in the opener.

Dan Rockenbach (Holland, Pa.) took the loss in relief in the opener, falling to 3-2 on the season while starter Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the loss in game two dropping his record to 1-3 on the season.

The Griffins and the Lightning matched each other in run production through the first seven innings with the Lightning scoring twice in the first and the Griffins matching it in the second.   Goldey-Beacom took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second before the Griffins added two more runs in the fourth on Labrador's two run home run over the left field fence to take a 4-3 lead.

The Lightning plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning t retake the lead 5-4 before the Griffins tied in on Labrador's infield groundout scoring Greg Sylvester (Trevose, Pa.)  in the sixth.   The Lightning added two more in the bottom of the sixth and the Griffins matched it with two in the top of the seventh on Huth's two run home run, tying the game at 7-7.

Goldey-Beacom sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth scoring eight runs on seven hits to blow the game open, 15-7.    Contoudis led off the ninth with his home run and the Griffins added one more run to make the final score 15-9.

In game two, the Lightning scored four times in the opening inning, twice in the third and added six more runs in the fourth en route to a 12-5 win.

The Griffins opened the third inning with four straight singles with Sam Barletta's (Royersford, Pa.) hit to right center field bringing home the first run.  Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Contoudis and Dietz brought home two more runs and a single from Connor Evans (Hermitage, Pa.), scored Barletta with the tying run.

The tie was short-lived as Goldey-Beacom broke the 4-4 deadlock with one blow, a John Kampes two-run home run to take a 6-4 lead.  GBC's Garret Musey blew open the game with a grand slam home run in the bottom fot he fourth.  The Lightning added two more runs in the inning to lead 12-4.  Dietz drove in the Griffins final run with a infield out in the seventh.

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team is back in action on Tuesday when they host West Chester University at Hostelley Field.   First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
