Nesemeier's Grand Slam Highlights Doubleheader Sweep of Nyack College

Pat Woltemate and Billy Bethel combined for a first-game shutout and Aiden Nesemeier belted a grand slam home run in the second game as the chestnut Hill College Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Nyack College 8-0 and 11-5 Saturday afternoon at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pa.

The sweep puts the Griffins at two games over .500 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games (9-7) and a game over .500 (18-17) overall.  Nyack remains winless on the season at 0-22 overall and 0-18 in league play.

Woltemate threw five solid innings in the opener, allowing just four hits and striking out six to earn the win an improve to 2-4 on the season.  Bethel made his first appearance of the season tossing two innings of two-hit baseball.

Nesemeier entered the game in the third inning with the bases loaded and blasted a home run over the left centerfield fence to give the Griffins a 10-1 lead.  The home run was Nesemeier's second of the season and his first career grand slam.

Corbin Dunnuck had two hits in the opener while Nate O'Donnell and Sam Barletta drove in two runs apiece to lead the Griffins.

In addition to Nesemeier's four RBI from the grand slam home run in game two, Connor Evans drove in three run and broke the school record with three sacrifice flies in the game.  O'Donnell drove in two runs while six different Griffin players had a hit apiece.  The Griffins also drew a total of eight walks in the contest.

Dunnuck laced an RBI double to put the Griffins on the board in the second inning of the opener and later scored on an error. Sacrifice flies by Ian Labrador and Barletta upped the lead to 4-0.  A sacrifice fly by Pat Meenan one inning later made the score 5-0.  In the sixth inning, O'Donnell delivered a two-run single to make the score 7-0. Two batters later Barletta singled to score Labrador with the final run of the game.

Sacrifice flies by Evans and O'Donnell along with a single from John Contoudis, staked the Griffins to a 3-1 lead  after two innings in game two.

The Griffins sent ten batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring seven times.  Evans' second sacrifice fly of the game scored the first run.  Greg Sylvester and O'Donnell were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded to bring home two more runs before Nesemeier delivered the big crushing blow in the form of a grand slam home run to make the score 10-1.

Nyack chipped away at the lead, scoring once in the fifth and three times in the sixth to close the gap to 10-5.  Evans' third sac fly of the game in the bottom of the sixth made the score 11-5.  Nyack made the game interesting in their final at-bat scoring three times before reliever Jordan DeChurch shut the door, striking out Skye Hanna to end the game.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team is back in action on Sunday, April 24, 2022 when they host Wilmington University in a divisional doubleheader at Hostelley field.  First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.   The team will hold senior day ceremonies in between games of the doubleheader.
