Fifth Inning Rally Leads to Win over Griffins

A five run fifth inning by Felician University blew open a close game as the Golden Falcons defeated the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team 10-2 Monday evening at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pennsylvania.

The loss drops the Griffins to 18-20 overall and 9-10 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Felician improves to 19-19 overall and 12-8 in league play.

It was a one-run game with the Golden Falcons leading 3-2 in the top half of the fifth when the game began to unravel for Griffins' starter Andrew Dietz.  Dietz, who gave up his first home run in 33 innings earlier in the third inning, had two more home runs hit against him in the fifth as the Golden Falcons produced five runs in the inning to take an 8-2 lead and end the senior pitcher's night on the mound (he stayed in the game as the designated hitter).   Dietz finished with three strikeouts and walked three batters in the losing effort, falling to 6-3 on the season.

The Griffins scored their only two runs in the first inning. Zach Ahmed led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, stole third and came around to score on Pat Meenan's groundout for Chestnut Hill's first run.  Dietz walked following the Meenan RBI and advanced on Connor Evans's single, then scored when Corbin Dunnuck dropped a single in front of the Felician center fielder for a  2-0 lead.

Luis Delacruz hit a three run home run in the top of the third to give Felician a 3-2 lead. Shawn Vazquez and Chris Fernandez added back-to-back home runs in the fifth.  Two sacrifice flies in the sixth produced Felician's final two runs.

The Griffins loaded the bases in their final at-bat but were unable to score.

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 when they host Jefferson University at Hostelley field.  First Pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
