Revak and Howell Lead Griffins to Playoff Win over Georgian Court

Ben Revak and J.R. Howell scored five goals apiece as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team took control of the game in the second half to defeat Georgian Court University 17-15 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament semi-final game Thursday afternoon in Lakewood, New Jersey.

The Griffins, seed #2 for the tournament improve to 10-6 overall and advance to the CACC Championship game where they will face top seed Wilmington University on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Georgian Court University.  The Lions finish their season at 6-11 overall.  The win was also the Griffins first in three CACC playoff games against the Lions.

The Revak-to-Howell for the score combination struck four times throughout the match with Liam McCann (Edmonton, Alberta) assisting on Howell's  (East Meadow, N.Y.) other goal in the game.  Revak (Aston, Pa.)  meanwhile scored four of his five goals in the first two quarters and added his fifth tally with 5:27 left in the third to give the Griffins the lead for good 14-13.

McCann was the third Griffin to have a multiple goal game in the contest with three goals.  He added two assists to finish the afternoon with five points. Howell assisted on two of McCann's goals and one each from Maurice Kelly (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) and Tommy Austin (Bethlehem, Pa.).  Kelly assisted on Revak's fourth goal and a goal by Billy DiMaio (Holmdel, N.J.) to finish with three points.  Jack Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist to round out the multiple point scorers for the Griffins.

Howell led the team with six ground balls while Clyne and Zach Schultz (Selbyville, Del.)  added five apiece.  Kelly and Zach Jastrzebski (Hackettstown, N.J.) had four ground balls apiece.  Austin Jones (Courtice, Ontario) recorded 13 saves in goal.

Back and forth action was the predominant theme in the opening quarter as both teams matched each other goal for goal until the final minute of the period. The Griffins matched the Lions with a goal by Revak with 1:28 left before Howell took a pass from McCann and put it in the net with 36 seconds left in the quarter to give the Griffins back to back goals and a 4-3 lead.
Georgian Court opened the second quarter with four straight goals to take their biggest lead of the game at 7-4.  Revak scored his second goal of the game with an assist from Clyne at the 10:51 mark.   McCann and Howell followed with two goals 25 seconds apart to tie the game at 7-7.

GCU's Tallen Smith (5 goals) scored with 6:42 left in the second quarter to put the Lions back on top 8-7 before Revak found the net twice in a 19 second span to give the Griffins a 9-8 lead with 5:17 left.  The Lions scored the final two goals of the quarter to lead 10-9 at halftime.

Three goals in the first 3:25 of the third quarter put the Griffins back on top 12-9.  The Revak-to-Howell combination struck first at the 13:12 mark tying the score.  Austin and DiMaio followed with goals to make the score 12-10 with 11:35 left.   The Lions roared back again with two goals to tie the game at 12-12 with 8:44 left.  Two minutes later Clyne put the Griffins back on top with an assist from McCann, 13-12.  GCU tied the score again before Revak and Howell had back-to-back goals to give the Griffins a 15-13 lead heading into the final quarter.

Howell fed McCann for his third goal of the game with 9:23 left, giving the Griffins their biggest lead at 16-13.  The Lions would not come any closer than two goals the rest of the way as the Griffins held off a final offensive threat from the Lions to earn the victory and a spot in the conference championship game for the second consecutive year
