Kiefer Shuts Out #16 West Chester; Dietz Becomes All-Time RBI Leader

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team took down nationally ranked West Chester University on Tuesday, by a score of 9-0.

The West Chester offense was stifled by a star performance from pitcher Michael Kiefer (Blue Point, N.Y.), who threw nine innings of scoreless ball, while allowing only two hits and one walk. The Griffins, meanwhile, rallied behind Kiefer and rushed out to an early lead, never looking back, to defeat the #16 ranked Golden Rams.

Chestnut Hill opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. After a single and stolen base from Ian Labrador (Miami, Fla.), John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) singled to right field, moving Labrador to third, and Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) followed with a single to center, scoring him. With that RBI, Dietz became Chestnut Hill College's all-time leader in the category, with a total of 126 for his career, passing current coach and former player Brandon Looby.  The Griffins then tacked on a second run in the second inning, as Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) doubled to left field, and Nate O'Donnell  (Hatfield, Pa.) doubled down the right field line, scoring his counterpart.

In the third, the Griffins significantly increased their lead. The scoring began with a Dietz single, which plated Contoudis. Besides Dietz, RBIs from Justin Geiger (Phoenixville, Pa.), O'Donnell, Labrador, and finally Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) made the score 8-0. Chestnut Hill scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth, when Connor Evans (Hermitage, Pa.) singled to right field, and scored Dietz.

Although the squad gifted Kiefer a large lead, the right-handed pitcher did not let up. In total, he struck out nine West Chester batters, and recorded all 27 outs without relief.

The Griffins will hit the road next, as they take on Caldwell University in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9th, before returning to home to Hostelley Field on Thursday, April 14th to take on Felician University.
