Andrew Dietz tossed a complete game shutout in game 1 as the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team split a doubleheader with Caldwell University, 6-0 and 1-3 Saturday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, New Jersey.
The Griffins are now 15-16 overall and 6-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games after the split. Caldwell is now 7-18 overall and 2-11 in league play.
Dietz struck out five and allowed just five hits as he earned his league leading fifth win of the season (5-1).
Connor Evans (Hermitage, Pa.) was 3-for-3 from the plate with a double, a triple and a walk while
Ian Labrador (Miami, Fla.), Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) and
Nate O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa.) had two hits apiece. Barletta drove in two runs.
Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) doubled to start the second inning and came home on O'Donnell's RBI single. O'Donnell followed as Labrador singled and Barletta laced a double to right field. Labrador then scored the Griffins' third run on an outfield error.
In the third inning, Evans tripled to center field to lead off and scored on
R.J. Huth's (Fairless Hills, Pa.) single into left field, giving the Griffins a 4-0 lead. Â
Chestnut Hill got their final two runs in the sixth as
Patrick Meenan (Oreland, Pa.) led off with a pinch-hit single to right field and scored on Labrador's triple . Barletta followed with an infield groundout to score Labrador with the final run of the game.
Dietz set down the Cougars in order in the sixth and after a one-out walk in the seventh, induced a double play ball to end the game.
In game two, four Caldwell pitchers limited the Griffins to just two hits as the Cougars salvaged a split with the 3-1 win.
Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) took the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season. Hughes went 4.2 innings, allowing all three runs while striking out two.
Evans and Dunnuck had the only two hits for the Griffins, both singles and both in the second inning when the Griffins scored their lone run.
It was Evans who delivered a one-out single and advanced to third on an error to start the offense for the Griffins. Meenan reached on a fielder's choice with Evans out at the plate. He later stole second and came around to score on Dunnuck's single to left field., giving the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Caldwell tied the game in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Anthony Rossomando. The Cougars scored their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth with a walk, sacrifice, a double and a single.
Chestnut Hill went down in order in their final two at-bats as the Cougars preserved the win. Nikko Matos earned the win in relief pitching a perfect fifth inning with Frank Lehmann closing the game out and getting the save.
The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team returns home on Thursday, April 14, 2022 for a doubleheader against CACC North Division rival Felician University. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
