Three players recorded double-doubles as the Chestnut Hill Women's Volleyball defeated the College of Saint Rose 3-1 to earn a split of their two-game season opening tri match at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut on Saturday.
The Griffins are now 1-1 with the win. Host Southern Connecticut State defeated the Griffins 3-0 in the opening match.
Mikayla Grimes (Fresno, Calif.) led the Griffins with 16 kills and 10 digs in the win over the Golden Knights. Setter
Mia Caporellie (Downingtown, Pa.) recorded 40 assists and 13 digs
while Henielys Ramos (Trujillo Alto, P.R.) had 12 kills and 12 digs.Â
Erika Dubosky (Summit Hill, Pa.) had a match high five aces while
Chloe Mettille (Doylestown, Pa.) led all players with 20 digs.
Angela April (Ridley, Pa.) had four solo blocks.
Chestnut Hill won the opening game of the match 27-25 before the Golden Knights evened the match at 1-1 with a25-17 win in the second set. The Griffins went on to capture the final two sets, 28-26 and 25-15
The Griffins jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set, following Dubosky's second ace of the match. The golden Knights battled back within one before the Griffins started to pull away again, taking a 21-16 lead following a golden Knights error. St. Rose then ran off five straight points to tie the set 21-21. Two straight Kills from Ramos put the Griffins ahead 24-22 but the golden Knights followed with two straight to again tie the score at 24-24. The two teams then exchanged points before a service error from St. Rose put the Griffins ahead 26-25. Ramos followed with an ace to win the set 27-25.
The Griffins struggled in the second set, trailing most of the way as the golden Knights evened the match with a 25-17 win. In the third set the Griffins trailed throughout the first half of the set before a Dubosky ace gave Chestnut Hill their first lead at 13-12. The Griffins continued to lead until St. Rose eked ahead 22-21 and later pulled within one point of winning the set, 24-22. A bad set by the Golden Knights and a kill and an ace from Grimes shifted the momentum back to the Griffins 25-24. Saint rose rallied to tie the game 26-26 before Grimes put down two straight kills for the win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
An 11-5 run to start the fourth set put the Griffins in control as the Golden Knights never got any closer than five the rest of the match as Chestnut Hill competed the four-set win, 25-15.
In the opening match against Southern Connecticut State, the hosts took the first set 25-21 and went on to complete the three-set sweep 25-21, 25-18, and 25-22 to hand the Griffins their first loss of the season.
Grimes led the Griffins with ten kills while Ramos added nine. Mettille and
Torrin Kelley (Hanover, Pa.) had three service aces apiece while Mettille led all players with 19 digs. Caporellie led all players with 26 assists.
Twelve of Mettille's digs came in the opening set, her first set as a collegian as the Griffins led throughout much of the first half before a 7-3 run by the Owls gave SCSU a 17-14 lead they would not relinquish as they won 25-21.
The Owls kept up the momentum winning the next two sets to complete the three-set sweep.
The Women's Volleyball team returns to action for their home and conference opener against Jefferson University on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
