Henielys Ramos scored the final three points of the match at the Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team dominated the fifth and final set (15-5) to earn a 3-2 win over Pace University at Sorgenti Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins improve to 2-7 with the win, while Pace falls to 1-6. Each team took turns winning a set as the Griffins won the opening set 25-23 with Pace following with a 25-22 win in the second set. Chestnut Hill rebounded to take the third set 25-21 before Pace returned the favor with a 25-21 win in the fourth set, leading up to the dominant fifth and final et which the Griffins easily won.
Ramos (Trujillo Alto, P.R.) recorded a double-double with a team high 17 kills and ten digs while adding five aces and three blocks.Â
Erika Dubosky (Summit Hill, Pa.) also added a double-double with 13 kills and ten digs while
Mikayla Grimes (Fresno, Calif.) was the third Griffins with ten or more kills, finishing the game with 16.Â
Mia Caporellie (Downingtown, Pa.) recorded 47 assists to lead all players while
Torrin Kelley (Hanover, Pa.) had a game high 21 digs.Â
Angela April (Ridley, Pa.) had another stellar defensive effort at the net, recording five blocks.
Kathryn Hanley (North Wales, Pa.) added three blocks.
With the match tied at 2-2, The Griffins got off to a great start in the fifth set with an ace from Caporellie and kills from Hanley and Ramos to take a 4-0 lead. Following a kill from Grimes to make the score 7-2. Pace committed three straight errors to give the Griffins a 10-2 lead. Pace scored three of the next five points to close the gap to 12-5 before Ramos landed a kill to bring the Griffins within two points of winning the match at 13-5. Ramos proceeded to record an ace on her first serve and ended the game with a waist high bullet off a jump serve that the Pace defender had no chance of returning to win the match.
Grimes and Dubosky combined for 11 kills in the first set as Chestnut Hill hung on to win 25-23 with neither team leading by more than three points except for one time late in the set as a Ramos' ace put the Griffins up 23-18. The Setters rallied to pull within two 24-22 before Dubosky landed her sixth kill of the set to seal the 25-23 win.
The second set was much of the same with nine ties and five lead changes before Pace started to pull away leading 24-20 . Dubosky had two straight kills to close the gap to 24-22 before Pace's Brielle Grimes (game high 21 kills) put the set away with her sixth kill of the set.
Neither team pulled away from the other in third set, much like the opening two stanzas as the Griffins got late kills from April and Dubosky to seal the 25-21 win.
Pace's Jamie Bittiger served seven straight times to turn a tie game into a 21-15 lead in the fourth set before giving the serve back to the Griffins on her final attempt of the set.Â
The Griffins clawed their way back within two points 23-21 but Pace closed out the set with two straight points to win 25-21 and even the match at 2-2, setting up the decisive final set.
The Chestnut Hill Women's Volleyball Team is back in action on Monday, September 12, 2022 with a home contest against Kutztown University. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
