Anthony Cancellaire threw for 106 yards in his collegiate sprint football debut but the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy took control of the game in the second half as they pulled away with a 27-7 victory over the Griffins at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium in Conshohocken, Friday night.
The game was the season opener for both squads.
Cancellaire completed 11 of 21 passes for 106 yards and one touchdown pass, a 22-yard toss to
Schneider Juste that gave the Griffins a rare lead against Navy 7-0 in the first quarter.Â
The Griffins defense stopped the Midshipmen on their first drive following the touchdown, holding the line when Navy went for the first down on a 4
th and two situation to take over on downs and continued to hold Navy scoreless until 6:12 left in the half when the midshipmen got on the board with a field goal.
Navy scored their first touchdown with just 20 seconds left in the first half and took a 10-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Midshipmen scored 17 unanswered points in the second half as the Griffins could not muster a sustained drive, turning the ball over on downs twice and punting twice along with a Navy interception ending a third quarter drive.
For the game, Navy amassed 337 yards of total offense to CHC's 126. The Griffins did win the time of possession battle, controlling the football for nearly 31 minutes.
The Chestnut Hill College Football program returns to action on Saturday, September 24, 2022 when they travel to face Mansfield University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
