Record Setting Night for Ramos as Griffins Sweep Lightning 3-0

It was another record setting night for right side hitter Henielys Ramos as the Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team won their third straight match, defeating Goldey-Beacom College 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-21) Thursday night at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia.

The Griffins improve to 8-9 overall and 4-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Lightning fall to 0-17 overall and 0-6 in league play.

Ramos set the school's Division II era record for service aces in a match with 13, one more than Ali Eberly's mark of 12, set vs. Lincoln University in 2011. Her 13 aces also ties the school's overall NCAA mark set back in 2005 by Caitlin Rickey against Wilson College.  In addition, the 13 service aces are the most by any NCAA Division II player this season in a single match.

The senior hitter also recorded 14 kills to notch her fifth double-double of the season.  Ramos is the first player since Rickey in 2006 to record a double-double with aces as one of the stats and just the third player in program history to have a double with aces and a second (or third) stat.

Mia Caporellie added her fourth double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs. It also marks her third straight match and sixth in the last seven that she has averaged over ten assists per set.

Mikayla Grimes added 11 kills while Torrin Kelley led the team with 15 digs.  Angela April had a game-high five blocks while Grimes added three.

Kills from Erika Dubosky, Grimes and Ramos opened the match as the Griffins scored the first four points and opened up an 16-8 lead midway through.  Goldey-Beacom would close within five at 20-15 before the Griffins would push the lead back up to eight 24-16 with a Lightning service error, a pair of kills from Kathryn Hanley and an ace from Caporellie before closing out the set 25-18.

Goldey-Beacom held small leads for much of the second set before a kill from April put the Griffins ahead 15-14.  Ramos then served ten straight points and notched five of her six aces in the set to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 win.

A service error by the Lightning early in the third set gave the Griffins their first lead 5-4 and brought Ramos back to serve.  She served 12 straight points for the Griffins, six of which came on aces to complete her record setting count of 13 as the Griffins took command with a 17-4 lead.  The lightning followed with a 13-5 run to close within four 21-17 before Ramos had her final kill of the match to stop the run and give the griffins a 22-17 lead.  The Lightning would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Griffins completed the sweep, 25-21 with Grimes scoring the final two points via kills.

For the match the Griffins had 38 kills and hit .220 (38-18 errors-91 attack attempts) while the Lightning had 24 kills and hit .123 (24-14-81).  Chestnut Hill's 16 service aces are the most by a CACC team in a three-set match this season. The Griffins also held a 40-30 advantage in digs and had five team blocks to the Lightning's four.

Shayla Boyce led the Lightning with eight kills.  Autumn Spendlove had nine digs and 21 assists.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, October 1, 2022 when they travel to play Dominican University in Orangeburg, New York.
