Griffins Win Third Straight, defeating Post 71-59

Emily Chmiel led four players in double figures as the Chestnut Hill college women's Basketball team won their third straight conference game defeating Post University 71-59 Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center in Waterbury, Connecticut

The Griffins improve to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.  The Eagles fall to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in conference games.

Chmiel led all scorers with 19 points (7-9 FG, 5-6 FT) and grabbed a team high six rebounds.  Morgan Orloski, in her first start of the season, made five of seven shots from the field en route to a 12-point effort.  Abbey Spratt (4-5 FG, 2-2 3FG) and Siobhan Boylan (3-5 FG, 2-3 FG) added ten points apiece.  Spratt led the team with four assists while Boylan added three.  Emily Sekerak added seven points and four rebounds.

Defensively the Griffins held the Eagles to just 28.1% shooting from the field (18-64) and under 25% in the second and third quarters, enabling the team to built a double-digit lead heading into the final period.

It was Chmiel, Spratt and Orloski who provided the big spark in the third quarter combining for 17 points in the period as the Griffins built a 53-40 lead after taking a seven-point lead into the locker room at halftime.  Post drew within four early when the Griffins scored eight straight points, with Orloski and Spratt both connecting on three-point baskets.  After an Eagle trey by Sha'raya Haines (18 pts.)  Chmiel scored two straight baskets and Kaitlyn Carter added two free throws to push the Griffins lead to 50-38.  Chmiel then added a layup and another free throw for her sixth and seventh points of the quarter, giving CHC a 53-48 lead before Post made two free throws to round out the scoring in the period.

The Griffins kept the lead in double digits as the fourth quarter progressed, taking their biggest lead, 68-51 on a Chmiel jump shot with 3:03 left.  The Eagles started to press in an attempt to comeback but would get no closer than ten the rest of the way.  Lauren Crim's two free throws with just under a minute remaining provided the final margin of victory.

Haines was the lone player in double figures for the Eagles.  Roxkel Washington added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds.

For the game, the Griffins shot 40% (24-60) including a six-for-14 effort from beyond the arc.  The team connected on 17 of 23 (73.9%) free throws while Post made 16 of 19 (84.2%).  CHC's defense forced 16 turnovers while committing a season low seven on their part, leading to a 16-6 advantage in the points off turnovers category.  Post outrebounded the griffins 47-35.

The women's basketball team returns to action no January 11, 2023 when they host Wilmington University at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
