Griffins Defense Struggles in Loss to Navy

The Chestnut Hill College Sprint Football team's defense struggled for the second game in a row as the United State Naval Academy (Navy) defeated the Griffins 48-7 Friday night in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Griffins fall to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League South Division.  Navy improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the division.

Navy ran for 366 yards and added 167 more in the air for 533 yards total offense.  Chestnut Hill had 239 passing yards and 89 yards rushing for 328 yards of total offense.

The Griffins scored their lone touchdown in the second quarter as Zyier Pannell ran the ball into the end zone from one yard out, completing an eight play-56 yard drive and making the score 21-7 at the time.

The Midshipman added four second half scores to complete the 48-7 win.

Pannell led the Griffins with 42 yards rushing on 14 carries.  Anthony Cancellare completed 15 of 30 passes with one interception for 148 yards while C.J. Small completed six of ten tosses for 91 yards including a 46 yard competition to Donnell Davis.   Xavier Hendricks led the Griffins with five catches for 45 yards.  Nazier Bryant added four catches for 61 yards including a 26-yard reception from a Cancellare pass.

Lex Williams had 11 tackles (ten solo) on defense while Justin Oppong added ten (seven solo).  Jonathan Havrilak had one sack and the Griffins only tackle for a loss. 

The sprint football team returns to action on Saturday, October 28, 2023, when they travel to face the University of Pennsylvania at historic Franklin field in Philadelphia.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
