Griffins Rally to Defeat Lions in Five Sets

For the second time this season, the Chestnut Hill College Women's volleyball team rallied to defeat a conference opponent in five sets as they rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Georgian Court University 3-2 Thursday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins, now winners of three straight matches, improve to 6-8 overall and 5-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Lions fall to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in league play.

The Lions won two of the first three sets, taking set number 1, 25-22 and the third set 25-19 with the Griffins sandwiching a win in set two 25-17.  GCU was just two points away from winning the fourth set and the match when the Griffins began a huge come-from-behind rally to force a fifth and deciding set.

Trailing 23-17, CHC's Mia Caporellie served eight straight points to give the Griffins a 25-23 win in the fourth set.  Caporellie had two service aces while the Lions gave the Griffins four points with attack errors.  Cha'kya Johnson had the only attack point for the Griffins in the rally.

Georgian Court scored the first point of the fifth set before the Griffins with Rachel Mace serving scored the next three points.  Mace had an ace and Erika Dubosky had a kill. After a kill from the Lions, the Griffins embarked on a 5-1 run to take a commanding 8-3 lead.   The two teams then switched sides as is customary in the fifth set.   Following the switch, Chestnut Hill scored four of the next six points to take a 12-5 lead.  Both teams then exchanged points  and  a pair of kills from Mace brought the Griffins to match-point before losing the serve.  GCU committed a service error on their next serve, giving the Griffins the set 15-8 and the match.  Chestnut Hill made nine kills in the set all without an error with Mace making six of them.

Dubosky led all players with 19 kills while Mace recorded her second straight double-double with 17 ills and 11 digs.  Johnson added 13 kills while Caporellie also recorded a double-double with 47 assists and ten digs.  Caporellie and Torrin Kelley had four aces apiece, combining for eight of the Griffins' season high 15 aces on the night.  Natalie Albin added three aces while Dubosky and Mace had two apiece.  Albin, the team's libero, also recorded her first collegiate kill in the fourth set.

On the defensive side, two more Griffin players joined Mace and Caporellie in reaching double figures for digs.  Albin led the Griffins with 15 digs while Kelley added 14.  Angela April had five blocks and Johnson chipped in three.

As a team the Griffins held a 61-54 lead in kills and a 15-6 advantage in the serving game.  Georgian court had one more dig (65-64) and two more total teams blocks (7.0-5.0)

The Chestnut Hill college women's volleyball team will travel to Bridgeport Connecticut for their next game as they take on the University of Bridgeport in a CACC crossover match on Saturday, October 7, 2023.  Tipoff is set for noon.
