Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Opens Season with a Loss to Wildcats

The 2023-2024 basketball season has begun with the Chestnut Hill college men's basketball team officially beginning their 23-24 campaign at the East Region Challenge in Amherst, New York, hosted by Daemen University.  Taking on the host Wildcats in their first game, the Griffins found themselves behind early and were unable to catch up as Daemen pulled away with an 88-50 win.

Daemen, having played in the Canadian Tipoff Tournament last week, improved to 2-2 while the Griffins fell to 0-1.

Three players reached double figures for the Griffins, led by Adam Angwafo's 12 points.  Noah Charles and Alejandro Redondo Cybak scored ten points apiece.  Angwafo also led the team with eight rebounds while Neal Hill added seven.  Hill also had two blocks.

The Wildcats erased an early 4-0 deficit with a 9-0 run in the first half.  Charles basket at the 13:27 mark, brought the Griffins within three 14-11, before Daemen produced an 11-0 uprising to take a double-digit lead 26-11.  Argel Petit IV's three point basket at the 7:37 mark broke the run.  Two minutes later, Daemen added a 10-0 run to lead 40-16 with 3:27 left. The Griffins scored the final six points of the first half to cut the deficit to 40-22 at the break.

The Griffins made just two of their first 12 shots in the second half as the Wildcats increased their lead to 54-30 with 14:07 left.  Solid shooting from Daemen allowed the Wildcats to increase their lead as the half wore on, leading by as many as 43 points.  A three pointer from Lucas Dunn and a dunk from Angwafo provided the final points for Chestnut Hill as the game ended with the Griffins losing 88-50.

For the game, the wildcats made 32 of 54 shots from the field (59.3%) while the Griffins made 19 of 54 (29.7%).  Daemen was also hot from beyond the three point arc, making 61.1% (11-18) of their long range shots (20.8% (5-24) for the Griffins).  The Wildcats had a slight 36-34 edge rebounding and committed four fewer turnovers.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, November 112, 2023, with their final game at the east Region Challenge, taking on Roberts Wesleyan University.  Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
