Adam Angwafo led four players in double figures, but Roberts Wesleyan university rallied late to hand the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team an 81-75 loss in the final game of the East coast Challenge at Daemen university in Amherst, New York.
The Griffins fall to 0-2 on the season while the Redhawks improve to 1-1.
Angwafo connected on nine of 12 shots from the field and five of six from the free throw en route to a team high 25 points.Â
Alejandro Redondo Cybak had 13 points (6-9 FG) and recorded his first double-double as a Griffin with 14 rebounds.
Neal Hill and
Argel Petitt IV added 11 points apiece. Hill added nine rebounds and Angwafo had three blocks.Â
Noah Charles and hill led the team with four assists apiece.
The Redhawks led for much of the first half with the Griffins holding a one point lead three times in the period, the last on a Cybak layup at the 13:32 mark (11-10). Chestnut Hill trailed by two, 24-22 when the Redhawks unloaded with a 12-2 uprising to increase their lead to double digits 36-24 with 4:22 left in the half. The Griffins rallied to cut the lead to five 40-35 with an 11-4 spurt with a minute left and went into the locker room at halftime trailing by seven 44-37.
The Griffins still trailed by seven three minutes into the second half when they went on an 11-3 run to retake the lead 51-50 at the 13:08 mark. Angwafo had six of 11 points with a Hill three-ball and a Cybak layup providing the rest of the offense.  Pettit then broke a 55-55 tie with four straight free throws and a three-ball from
Lucas Dunn increased the lead to five 65-60 with 6:01 left. The Redhawks rallied with eight straight points to retake the lead 68-65 with 5:16 left and the Griffins played from behind the rest of the way, coming within one point twice but keeping the game close (between one and four points) until the final minute when the Redhawks upped their lead to seven 80-73 before settling in for the six-point win.
Both teams producing nearly identical shooting percentages from the field (RWU-46%- CHC 46.3%) with the Redhawks making four more field goals (29-25). The Griffins also shot 50% from beyond the arc (8-16). Roberts made 18 of 24 free throws (75%) to CHC's 65.4% (17-26). The Redhawks also capitalized on 23 griffin turnovers, scoring 30 points. RWU had 13 turnovers leading to 15 Griffin points.
Malik Brooks led the Redhawks with a game high of 28 points.
The men's basketball team returns to action with a road game at West Liberty State University in West Virginia on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
