Trailing two sets to one, the Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team rallied to earn a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Central Atlantic collegiate conference south division rival holy Family University Thursday night at Sorgenti Arena.
The win, Chestnut Hill's fourth straight, upped the Griffins CACC record to 9-4 as they maintain second place in the CACC south Division standings. More importantly, the Griffins secured one of the fourth tournament championship berth from the Division with the win. Â
Chestnut Hill won the first set, 25-14 before the Tigers took the next two 25-22 and 25-23. The Griffins rallied to win the fourth set 25-17 and battled to take the match with a 15-10 win in the fifth set.
The Griffins complete the season sweep of the Tigers who fall to 7-7 in league play and cannot catch Chestnut Hill as the Griffins hold the tiebreaker by virtue of the season sweep.
Erika Dubosky and
Rachel Mace led all players with 19 and 17 kills respectively.
Mia Caporellie added five aces and led the team with 49 assists. Dubosky and
Torrin Kelley added two aces apiece.
Mace also led the Griffins with 23 digs to record her third straight double-double and 14
th of the season. Dubosky also had a double-double, her 11
th of the season, adding 14 digs.
Natalie Albin and
Chloe Mettille had 21 and 13 digs respectively. Caporellie was the third Griffins player to record a double- double with 11 digs, giving her 12 double-doubles on the season.Â
Cha'kya Johnson led the team with four blocks while
Angela April had three.
The Tigers jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the opening set before the Griffins battled back to tie the score and eventually take a one point lead. Both team's exchanged points until a pair of consecutive kills from Dubosky gave the Griffins a 12-10 lead, starting a string of seven straight CHC points to put some distance between the two teams with a 17-10 lead. The Griffins' final five points all came on kills with Dubosky scoring the set winner.
The second set saw 13 ties and five lead changes as both teams battled back and forth. The Griffins scored the first four points before the Tigers scored the next five to take a slim lead. Three attack errors by Chestnut Hill gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead and forced a CHC timeout. Neither team led by more than two points with eight ties along the way until the final three rallies. Holy Family broke a 22-22 tie by scoring the final three points to take the set 25-22 and even the match at 1-1.
Holy Family jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the third set before a 6-2 run by the Griffins evened the score at 11-11. Chestnut Hill went up by three 15-12 with the Tigers countering with three straight points to again tie the score. Again, neither team took more than a two-point lead and the set saw six more ties before the Tigers had two straight kills to earn a 25-23 win and lead the match 2-1.
The Griffns got off to a slow start in the fourth set, trailing 4-1 and 8-4. The team, however, showed its resilience, rallying back to tie the game at 12-all before an ace from Kelley gave CHC their first lead. Four straight kills from Dubosky and another from
Maya Hopson gave the Griffins their biggest lead since the first set, 21-14. Chestnut Hill scored four of the next seven points to even the match at 2-2, forcing a fifth and deciding set with a 25-17 win.
Kills from Dubosky and April opened the fifth set as CHC jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Holy Family rallied with a 6-2 run to take their first lead of the set 6-5. Two straight kills from Mace put Chestnut Hill back on top, 8-7 as the two teams switched sides at the midway point. An ace from Mettille and another kill from Mace gave the Griffins a three-point lead 10-7 and forced a Tiger timeout out. Chestnut Hill scored three of the next five points to increase their lead to 13-9. Dubosky added a kill to make the score 14-10 and the Griffins completed the comeback victory when HFU's Natasha Yanief hit the ball wide to give the Griffins the 15-10 win and the match 3-2.
Ava Kidd and Jaylen Bralts led the tigers with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Maeve Boylan had 31 digs to pace the Tigers' defense and lead all players. Morgan Steck had 29 assists.
 The women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, November 4, 2023, when they travel to face Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
