Five players reached double figures as the Chestnut Hill college women's Basketball team cruised to a 96-44 win over Penn State-Abington Monday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins head into Christmas break with a 5-5 record. The Nittany lions drop to 5-7 with the loss.
Bridie McCann led the Griffins with 25 points, making eight of 12 shots from the field, with five of those coming from beyond the three point arc.Â
Caraline Herb made seven three point baskets, one shy of the school record, en route to a career high 21 points.
Lindsey Lane scored a season high 13 points while
Caleigh Edwards and
Sara Tamoun rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points apiece.
Kaitlyn Carter grabbed a career high 16 rebounds while dishing out eight assists. (also a career high). Lane grabbed seven boards while
Jessica Mangoni pulled down six.Â
Avery White became just the fifth player in program history to record ten or more assists in a game, finishing the afternoon with 11, while also leading the team with four steals. Edwards added seven assists.
The Griffins finished the game with 29 assists, tying a school record set back in 2010 against Washington Adventist. The game also marked the first time in program history that three different players recorded seven or more assists in a single game.
The Griffins led wire-to-wire scoring the first six points and quickly opened up a double digit lead following McCann's second three-point basket of the quarter, 21-11 with 3:36 left in the period. CHC expanded the lead 13 by the end of the period. Chestnut Hill shot 63% for the quarter with McCann scoring 13 points in the period.
Herb started the second period after coming off the bench in the first quarter and connected on four three point baskets for 12 of the Griffins 22 points as they expanded the lead to 50-25 by halftime.
Five different players scored in the third quarter with Herb and McCann combining for 11 of CHC's 18 points as the Griffins continued to expand the lead,  increasing their lead to 34, 68-34 heading into the final period.
Tamoun scored all ten of her points in the fourth quarter as the Griffins held Abington to just ten points in the period as they closed out the game with 28 points in the period to win 96-44.
For the game, the Griffins shot 49.3%  (36-73) from the field and a solid 51.9% from three-point (14-27). Chestnut Hill's 14 three-point baskets are the most in a game since the team made 15 against Jefferson in 2020.  CHC outrebounded  PSU 56-29.
The women's basketball team returns to action after the Christmas break, traveling for an exhibition game with Division I Binghampton University on December 30, 2023. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
